Thames Valley Police and Police Crime Commissioner hustings were held at BNU

BNU holds hustings event for Thames Valley Police and Police Crime Commissioner election

BNU welcomed the Thames Valley Police and Police and Crime Commissioner hustings event ahead of the election of TVP Police & Crime Commissioner.

Held in the Gateway Lecture Theatre, Professor Nick Braisby, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University, welcomed guests and opened the event.

Candidates for TVP PCC include Matthew Barber, current Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley; Liberal Democrat Councillor, Tim Bearder; Labour candidate and Barrister, Tim Starkey; and independent candidates Ben Holden-Crowther and Russell Douglas Fowler.

TVP and PCC Hustings were held in the Gateway Lecture Theatre

Each candidate was given five minutes to set out their manifesto and priorities, which was followed by a Q&A session with the audience, moderated by Allison Savory, the Subject Lead for policing programmes at BNU.

Speaking about the event, Allison said: ‘It’s been a pleasure to have the Thames Valley Police and Police and Crime Commissioner hustings at Buckinghamshire New University.

‘I’m delighted with how the evening went, the five candidates were absolutely brilliant and having the PCC at BNU not only establishes our police studies and policing degrees among the local community, but also as valued programmes at BNU.’

PCCs are elected in areas of England and Wales to make sure local police meet the needs of the community.

They are responsible for how an area is policed; the police budget; the amount of Council Tax charged for the police; the information local people receive about what the local police are doing; and appointing and dismissing the chief constable (the most senior police officer for the area).

The polls open on Thursday 2 May.
