Bucks ad graduates ‘prove’ themselves with comedy Warburtons ad

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you would have seen, or at least heard, about the new Warburtons’ advert featuring Bolton’s funny man Peter Kay.

But not many people will know that the parody costume drama ad, called ‘Pride and Breadjudice’, came from the minds of Bucks New University alumnae Gina Ramsden and Freya Harrison.

The 24-year-olds, who graduated in 2015, have been a creative team since meeting at Leeds College of Art, and then followed each other to Bucks for a BA (Hons) Creative Advertising.

Gina, who now lives in Stoke Newington, said: “We’ve been incredibly lucky to spend every day with a mate and get paid for it!

“Both being from Yorkshire and a million miles from home, it has been difficult - but working with a friend makes it a hell of a lot easier.”

The duo’s career started with a placement at Mother London, a creative agency network, straight after their End of Year Show. After three months they moved on to advertising giant Saatchi and Saatchi. In January 2016 Gina and Freya were hired at creative agency WCRS where they came up with the idea and wrote the script for the bread ad.

It tells the romantic story behind Warburtons, as Bolton comedian Kay portrays dashing seed salesman Thomas Warburton, who wins the love of a baking-obsessed noblewoman called Ellen. The couple bond over the creation of a seeded batch loaf, including a hilarious homage to the famous film Ghost (1990) potter’s wheel scene.

Freya, who now lives in Epping, said: “It took a long time to craft the script and get it Peter Kay-ready but we’ve been pretty overwhelmed by the response. We were involved in every part of the process from casting, to location, to costume to even dance choreography. Being on set shooting the ad was a crazy experience but we loved every second.”

And the bonus was Kay loved the script and was everything Gina and Freya thought he would be.

Warburtons ad still“We were pretty petrified to meet someone we look up to so much, but he was better than any of our expectations,” said Gina.

“He was obviously bloody hilarious but was actually really supportive. It was surprising how much he loved the script and respected that we had written this at our age. Also I don’t think it hindered us that we are northern!”

Gina said studying at Bucks really helped the pair prepare for the advertising world and advised future students to ‘work their arse off’.

She added: “Bucks is well-known in the industry for giving their students a huge amount of connections. Freya and I partnered up early in the second year and were the first in our course to do so, this led us to getting our book together first and going out on our own into industry to show our portfolio. No one else will make you succeed in this industry, it’s competitive and you have to be on your game. The course at Bucks provides limitless contacts which is vital in actually getting you a job.”

This was the duo’s first ever full campaign and now they hope to expand their portfolio and get their teeth into something new.

“While here at Bucks they made the most of our industry links and have continued to go from strength to strength in the advertising world ever since.”
