Student Supervisors and Assessors in Healthcare Practice

Credits: 20 credits at Level 6 and 7

Why study this subject?

This module will support you to become a Practice Supervisor and Assessor as well as giving you 20 academic credits at Level 6 (Degree) or Level 7 (master’s).

What will I study?

This module is designed for practitioners from a variety of professional contexts who are responsible for supporting, supervising, teaching and assessing learners in professional practice.

We'll help you develop the knowledge, skills and values to facilitate learning in professional practice and, where appropriate, to do so in an inter-professional context.

The Level 6 module will cover areas such as:

• current issues in Nurse Education and new Education guidelines (SSSA)
• roles and responsibilities of Supervisors and Assessors and the Academic Assessor
• effective practice learning
• supervision
• assessment
• academic assessment
• learning environment
• student empowerment.

The Level 7 module will cover similar areas to the Level 6 modules but will also focus on how to provide effective feedback. It'll also enhance your leadership skills.
 

What will I study?

On successful completion of Level 6 module, you will have gained the skills and knowledge to:

• evaluate relationships within the practice learning community, promote anti-discriminatory practice, develop mutual trust and respect and assist learners to make the transition to practice helping them integrate academic and practice elements of learning
• assess a learner’s stage of learning and their learning needs, facilitate an appropriate programme of learning and evaluate its effectiveness by ensuring the student makes the most of their educational opportunities in practice
• critically appraise a range of assessment strategies and assess the level of competence of learners in practice, and be accountable for confirming the achievement of a required standard whilst on the course
• develop a critical awareness of the inter-professional context in practice learning, maintaining appropriate professional boundaries while promoting learning across professional groups
• develop your leadership skills in prioritising work, delivering effective learning programmes, evaluating effectiveness, providing feedback to learners and acting as a learner advocate and encouraging student empowerment as appropriate throughout the course.

The Level 7 module will provide you with the skills and knowledge to:

• critically evaluate relationships within the practice learning community and assist learners to make the transition to practice, helping them integrate academic and practice elements of learning
• assess a learner’s stage of learning and individual learning needs, facilitate an appropriate programme of learning and evaluate their effectiveness, making the most of educational opportunities in practice during the time of the course
• critically analyse a range of assessment strategies and assess the level of competence of learners in practice and be accountable for confirming the achievement of a required standard during the course
• demonstrate a critical awareness of the inter-professional context in practice learning, maintaining appropriate professional boundaries while promoting learning across professional groups
• analyse your own leadership style and support for learners and peers, prioritising work to maximise the effectiveness of learning and where appropriate encourage engagement in inter professional learning activities.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The course consists of four taught study days in the University or a trust education centre.

You will need to complete:

• a Learning Contract working with a student for a minimum of 4 weeks (supervised) and complete 32 hours of protected time facilitating learning with the learner in practice.
• you will also need to complete an assignment.

Both of these elements need to be passed in order to complete the course.
