What facilities are available to you on your course?

Have you ever considered studying photography or learning about what it takes to work in the art and design industry? Learning about photography at BNU opens a lot of doors you never imagined were feasible, such as working at a museum or an archive.

Buckinghamshire New University's Photography course is fairly new, which means we have some of the most up-to-date equipment and facilities in the industry, from the latest model of Apple Macs to a brand-new Dark Room, where we can learn how the pros took the best photos before digital came onto the scene.

Base Room

Our base room was opened last year and is one of the best rooms on our floor. Whether it is to eat lunch, have a lesson, or even attend presentations and guest lecturers, our base room is the place to be. From our comfortable couch to our stylish chairs, the base room was designed for us to be able to hang out as a class and have our own area on campus.

Dark Room

Our darkroom is cutting-edge, from the wet area to the enlargers to the film dryers. Semester two in your first year is when you learn all there is to know about the darkroom and its features; I have learnt so much in the previous year and a half. Before you enter our darkroom, there is a prep area where you can unload your camera using our loading bags. As you go around the sealing door that blocks out light from the room, you enter the wide space needed to process film.

Equipment Room

Our equipment room has all the equipment required to be a photographer. It also houses our very own technician, who you can chat to about anything relating to photography. Whether it's to borrow some equipment or to ask their opinion on a shoot you want to do, they are extremely knowledgeable and always happy to help.

Cameras, tripods, lenses, you name it, we have it and the latest models to shoot with.

Mac Suite

The Mac suite is the centre to a lot of our lessons. Equipped with everything you'll ever need, from Adobe features like Photoshop and Lightroom to Microsoft applications. You’ll spend the most of your time in here, and it is always open from Monday to Friday, from morning till night.

Printing and Scanning Room

Our print and scanning room has stations where students can scan film into the computer. We also have top-of-the-line scanners and printers to ensure the greatest possible quality.

Photography Studios

We have three studios that are available to students. Our first studio, and probably my favourite is the dark studio where you can complete block out any light sources, like sunlight, for photoshoots. Our second studio is known as the daylight studio because of the natural light that comes in through the windows. It's ideal for fashion, portrait, and commercial photography. And finally, we have our still life studio, which works in tandem with our daylight studio. The best part about our new still life

studio set-up is that we have lights above and below, as well as side lighting for anything you're attempting to photograph, whatever the product might be.
