A week in the life of an Interior Design Student at BNU

A week in the life of an Interior Design Student at BNU

I am a first-year student at Buckinghamshire New University studying Interior Spatial Design. At Buckinghamshire New University, as an Interior and Spatial Design student, you’ll benefit from studio and workshop-based model making skills using our laser cutting and prototyping equipment. You’ll also gain knowledge in advanced drawings and 3D modelling techniques. Aside from my studies, there is loads to get up to here at BNU. Here is an average week for me.

Interior and Spatial Design - Students' work

Monday

Mondays are my longest day at university and consists of a workshop. There are 10 students in the first year of the BA (Hons) Interior and Spatial Design course, which is nice because you are able to have more 1:1 time with the tutor. Every morning, I walk to university from Hughenden Student Park Village (student accommodation), it is about a 20-30-minute walk.

Mondays consist of an hour lecture and then practical work for the rest of the day. We have an hour’s lunch break at around 1pm, in which I will usually go to the Students’ Union to get some lunch with my friends. I usually finish at 4pm on a Monday.

After Uni, I pop to the shops to get ingredients to meal prep for the rest of the week. I find meal prepping is the easiest way to save money on food as it can be very hard to buy for one. The rest of my evening consists of cooking, watching Netflix and making sure I have everything ready for Tuesday.

Tuesday

Tuesdays are my favourite day. I start off by going to the gym and then I go to class. We focus on the ‘Design Tools’ module which consists of drawing and model making. Tuesdays workshop only lasts the morning and occasionally we have a workshop in the afternoon (e.g. wood workshop or metal workshop). For the rest of the afternoon, I catch up on any work that I need to do and also personal jobs like doing my washing!

Wednesday and Thursday

First year Interior Design students have Wednesday and Thursday off. Wednesday is considered “sports day” at BNU. This is where students have the chance to play their society sports. For me, my Wednesdays and Thursdays are very similar- they consist of me going to the gym and doing Uni work. Wednesday is one of the student nights out, so depending on my workload, I will go out with my friends.

Friday

On Friday mornings I go to the gym before class. Friday consists of a lecture and seminar. This day is for the ‘Critical and Historical Thinking’ module which is essay based. Fridays only last until 1pm. On Friday afternoons I will pick up my weekend food shop and clean my room. I usually have the rest of the evening to relax, do uni work and go out with friends.
