My society: Roller-Skating

My society: Roller-Skating

Societies are a big deal at university. They’re where you get to meet a different group of people outside of your course and halls of residence.

In my first and second year, I made the mistake of not joining any societies as I didn’t really want to be involved, I guess that the pandemic had a lot to do with this as well!

However, in my first year the Big Deal, provided by the Students’ Union, paid for a group of students to go to the roller-skating ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Roller disco’ at the local leisure centre in High Wycombe. I, of course, jumped at this opportunity. After roller-skating for most of my life and attending events like these in my childhood, I couldn’t wait.

It was at this event that I met some amazing friends and it made a few of us realise that we wanted to make this a regular thing. It was a fun activity on a Friday night that gave us a brilliant atmosphere to get together and socialise.

Fast forward to my third year, we created the Roller-Skating society where I am currently treasurer. It’s been a difficult and challenging process with so many learning curves in our first year, but it has been so much fun. Being on the committee of a society has meant that I have gotten involved a lot more within the university as a whole- taking part in volunteering and more nights at the venue.

There is no commitment to our society, so if you are wanting to join but you’re thinking that some weeks you’ll be busy or you just might not feel like socialising, then that’s ok. We’ll just welcome you the next time.

Budgeting costs tend to allow us to Roller-Skate once a month for free, however we try and make up more socialising events during the week with nights out, quiz nights and more relaxed environments like film nights.

At our last session, we welcomed a collaboration with the LGBTQ+ Society, and we’re looking at taking the Rugby boys ice skating very soon. It’s a great chance to mix with other people in different clubs and societies around the University.

I am running for Chair of Roller-Skating next year, so if you are a prospective or current student looking to take up a new skill or enhance your already amazing roller-skating skills, then I look forward to welcoming you to our society. If not, I hope that you are able to find a society here at BNU that suits you, and if not … create your own, it’s so easy to do.
