Deferred Entry

Deferred Entry

When making a decision about applying to university, you may sometimes feel that deferring your application and having a gap year may be the right choice for you.

There are a couple of options available to you to make a deferred application. You may choose one of the following:

  1. Select a deferred start date for your course at the time of making your UCAS application.
  2. Make a decision to defer your application after you’ve applied.

Deferring an application after you've applied

If you wish to defer your application after you’ve applied, you will need to put this request in writing to our admissions team. In order to process your request, they will require the following information from you:

  • full name
  • UCAS Personal ID number
  • name of the course you have applied for
  • reason for deferring.

The admissions team will then contact you to let you know the outcome of your request.

Can any application be deferred?

Only unconditional offers can be deferred, and applications can only be deferred for one academic year.

Unfortunately we are unable to accept deferred applications for courses involving professional registration, including (but not limited to) nursing or social work. Please contact us to discuss your individual request.

Meeting the conditions of your offer

It’s important to note that you will need to meet the conditions of your offer during the same academic year that you are making your original application, in order to defer your entry. We are unable to defer conditional offers.

Tuition fees and course content

At the time of your application we may not have all course details (such as course fees and modules) confirmed for subsequent intakes, although the information we have published for the current year should give you a good guide.

Occasionally, Buckinghamshire New University may need to suspend or withdraw a programme from its portfolio. In the event that we withdraw or suspend a programme, any applicants will be contacted as soon as possible to inform them.  Where a course is withdrawn, applicants will be given the opportunity to apply for other programmes at BNU, or to receive assistance with finding and applying to vacancies at other institutions if required.

We'll keep in touch

After you have requested to defer your application, we’ll keep in touch with any important information you need to know about joining us. This is likely to be in the spring before you start your course, and will include details of how to apply for your accommodation, fees and funding information, and your joining instructions. You may also receive emails from us keeping you up-to-date with things that are happening at BNU that we think may be of interest.

Don’t forget to let us know if any of your contact details change so that you don’t miss any information we send to you.

If you have any questions about deferring your application, please contact the Admissions Team on 0330 123 2023 or email us
