BNU's Aviation and Security Graduate Teaching Associate shortlisted for Security Institute award

BNU’s Graduate Teaching Associate in Aviation and Security, Shelley Jones, has been named as a finalist in the Academic Achiever of the Year Award category at the The Security Institute Awards.

Shelley’s dissertation, titled ‘An analysis of crowdsourced open-source intelligence investigations and ethical considerations’, saw her interview and feature quotes from intelligence analysts and investigators.

She completed the dissertation as part of the BSc (Hons) Intelligence, Analysis, and Management degree at BNU last year, which has now been renamed BSc (Hons) Intelligence, Security, and Resilience.

Academic Achiever of the Year Award is in memory of Wilf Knight, a Metropolitan Police officer and Special Branch officer. The award recognises outstanding research on a security topic and is awarded to a university student producing the most innovative and significant dissertation.

Self-nomination is not permitted in this category. Instead, a nominee's dissertation on a security subject must be submitted by their colleagues.

Addressing her nomination, Shelley said: “I’m elated that my undergraduate research project is being considered alongside of masters level research.”

Commenting on Shelley's shortlisting, Associate Professor in Policing, David Giblin, said: "Congratulations to Shelley. She is a real talent and we are lucky to have her on the team in the Centre for Intelligence, Security & Resilience."

The Security Institute encourages and recognises excellence as a part of its commitment to professional development and raising awareness of what good security looks like. To honour this recognition, The Institute has launched an annual Awards Gala Dinner where individuals and companies going the extra mile are recognised by their peers for their achievements in 11 possible award categories.

Winners will be announced at the Gala Awards Dinner on the 24 April 2024.
