External Examining

External examiners play an important role in identifying good practice and making recommendations to enhance further a university’s assessment policies and procedures. They’re an essential part of our quality assurance processes and we place great important on their feedback.

Each year, we ask external examiners to provide informed and impartial comment on:

  • The academic standards of our programmes in relation to the Framework of Higher Education’s (FHEQ), Subject Benchmark Statements, and any relevant professional standards
  • Levels of student achievement, including those of different cohorts and any partners, in comparison with those of other UK higher education providers
  • Fairness, rigour and consistency of application of our assessment processes and regulations
  • Any good practice or areas of enhancement that have been identified

External examiners don’t contribute to the delivery of our teaching or work directly for the University.

Newly-appointed external examiners will be invited to an induction day where they’ll be briefed on their key duties, responsibilities and reporting arrangements. All external examiners will be provided with the relevant information to undertake their role.

The fees for External Examiners are determined by the number of credits that the External Examiner is responsible for. Currently, the fees for the Academic Year 2023-2024 are as follows:
