BucksAnywhere is a web service, based on AppsAnywhere, which provides access to many of the software applications you use for teaching and studying. BucksAnywhere can be used from your own Windows device or from a University owned PC or laptop, from any location.

You can use BucksAnywhere on your own computer to use many of the applications that you would normally access via a student desktop machine.

BucksAnywhere is now available on Windows and Mac devices

How does it work?

BucksAnywhere has two parts.  The first part is a web portal from which you can view the catalogue of software applications and operates very much like an apps store.  The second part is a small client application you run on your computer to help launch the applications

Which software applications are available?

We have over 100 applications and utilities available and we expect this number to grow over time as we add more software packages to the service. A list showing the applications that are currently available and the ones that are being worked on is available here.

Requesting Additional Software

Requests for additional software can also be made via the IT Service Desk. Software applications must meet both licensing and performance criteria to be included.

Support for Mac IOS devices

Support for Mac IOS devices is now available. You can access BucksAnywhere applications on your own device.

What credentials do I use to get in to BucksAnywhere?

Use your Bucks Username and Password. The same ones you use to access a PC on campus.

Why won’t my session validate?

Click ‘retry’ in the top right hand corner.

Can I use BucksAnywhere on an Apple, Linux, Android or IOS device?

BucksAnywhere is now available on Mac Devices, Chromebook IOS and Linux Android devices are currently being tested and will be made available shortly.

How do I prevent the Cloudpaging Player running every time?

'Cloudpaging' is the technology that enables applications to run locally on your computer without having to first be downloaded or installed.

These ‘Cloudpaging’ applications run locally on your computer. This means they appear on your Start Menu and work the same as installed applications.

Each time you restart your computer the Cloudpaging Player will load automatically, so any applications you have launched from BucksAnywhere can still be used.

What is the Parallels?

You may notice the Parallels Player on your Mac. The Parallels will be installed automatically when you install the BucksAnywhere Client on your Mac computer. This is needed to launch applications available in BucksAnywhere.

What if I have an issue or an application I need is not on BucksAnywhere?

Can I use applications offline?

You can work offline on your Windows device using the Cloudpaging Player. For personal devices that are running Windows 10, this is installed automatically when you download the BucksAnywhere Client.

Some applications are available to use offline using the Cloudpaging Player. These applications will continue to work even if you lose your Internet connection.

If an application freezes when you go offline (or shows an error), simply connect to the internet again and the application will resume.

You can also check which of your applications are available to use offline in advance

  1. From your desktop, click the Start menu and type Cloudpaging Player
  2. Open Cloudpaging Player, click the File menu and choose Work Offline.
  3. See the list of applications that will not be available offline.
  4. You should always choose No in the dialogue box that appears to ensure that the application remains on your machine.

Note: Offline applications continue to work automatically when you disconnect from the Internet. There is therefore no need to choose the Work Offline option in normal use.

How do I remove applications from Cloudpaging Player?

If you need to remove a Cloudpaging application from your computer you can do so quickly and easily.

  1. From your desktop, click the Start menu and type Cloudpaging Player.
  2. Open Cloudpaging Player, click the application you want to remove and then the Remove button.
  3. All components of the application will be removed (from the Player and your Start Menu).

If you wish to launch the application in future, you can access it again from AppsAnywhere

Why do my applications run slowly the very first time I use them?

The first time you run an application in AppsAnywhere, you will need to download the application from our servers and install it on your PC.

Over a slow internet connection, this may take some time. You can monitor the progress of the installation via the Cloudpaging application that is installed by AppsAnywhere the first time you use it.

On the first run, the application may run before it is entirely downloaded and may run slowly until this is completed. Once the installation process has completed the application will be cached on your PC and should start quickly each time you start it.

Will all Apps run on my personal device?

When using AppsAnywhere on personal devices, some applications may not be launched due to either the file size being too large or the software license does not permit usage outside of the campus. Additionally some applications require you to be connected to the VPN.

What happens if an application is too large to run on my device or has a campus only licence?

In the case of applications being either too large in file size or limited by licensing, you will need to use our Virtual Desktops or remote lab service. This will allow you to access a campus PC from your personal device, which will allow you to run the software.

Why are applications available to some but not others?

Some applications are specific to schools and therefore will not be available to every student.

What is Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)?

The Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) service has been provided in order to give access to certain applications that require high specification PCs to run.

You will not be able to use this service if you are not on a module that needs access to it. You will be advised by your tutor if this is the case.

Certain virtual desktops make use of the AppsAnywhere service in order to access applications and it should behave as though you are on campus.
