Graduation

A Message from Professor Nick Braisby, Vice-Chancellor of Buckinghamshire New University

Dear student,

As you will know, we had to take the difficult decision to postpone our September Graduation ceremonies until summer 2021 as it is not clear when large gatherings of people will be permitted. However, if you are eligible to graduate, please remember that we’re only postponing your moment of glory as you cross the stage!

The University and Bucks Students’ Union want to celebrate with you in what would have been your Graduation Week (8-10 September), and so we’re organising Facebook Live events so that you, your friends and family can mark your achievements in a virtual graduation event. You’ll see your name on screen and receive a video yearbook put together by your Students’ Union; video messages from me, your Head of School, the Students’ Union President and Bucks alumni, along with an online Graduation booklet.

Your invitation and programme

You should have received an official invitation by e-mail to the event relevant to your programme. The dates of the celebrations are:

*Please click on the date and time of your ceremony to access your Event Programme, a link to the official invite, and more.

Please don’t worry, your formal ceremony will still take place in your special Class of 2020 Graduation Week from 5-8 July, 2021, and you’ll still get your award and certificate this year, on time. We want to make sure that nothing stops the future you’ve been working so hard to prepare for since joining Bucks.

Best wishes,

Nick

Virtual Graduation Celebration FAQs

A commemorative programme to accompany the virtual graduation celebration will be available on the morning of your ceremony on our website. You can view it online or download it as a keepsake.

The programme only contains the names of students who have been made an award by the Board of Examiners before 14 August 2020. If you had referral work over the summer your name will not appear. If however you were made an award before this date please contact graduation@bucks.ac.uk who will look into this and advise you.

Everyone who has been made a award by the University Board of Examiners, whether you studied at one of the Bucks campuses or at a partner college. However, the event is open to everyone including family and friends of those celebrating having passed their qualification. No log in or prior registration is needed. All are welcome to watch, engage and celebrate!

You can click on the link here which will take you to the Bucks Facebook page. Alternatively you can just search and go straight to the Bucks Facebook page from your device. At the time advertised the Facebook Live video will appear in the newsfeed. If you there early you may need to refresh the page.

The video will remain in the Bucks Facebook page news feed after the event, so you can find it and watch it at a time that is convenient for you.

No. This virtual celebration is an opportunity to connect and celebrate with students in what would have been graduation week. We continue to monitor the situation closely and to follow the UK government guidelines but have set the Graduation Ceremonies for 5-8 July 2021 for those who had their ceremony postponed from September 2020. This will be a dedicated celebration for those affected by the postponed ceremonies and will not be combined with the following year’s celebrations. Bookings for the ceremonies will open closer to the time and this will be communicated with all students in due course.

You will be invited to the next available graduation ceremony depending on the deadline for your referral work. Bookings for the July 2021 and September 2021 ceremonies will open closer to the time and this will be communicated with all students in due course.

Graduation FAQs

Following the Prime Minister’s latest announcement, it’s was not clear when large gatherings of people will be permitted, or when our Graduation venue will be able to reopen. It’s very important to us that our University community celebrates your achievement in the style you deserve. We didn’t want to make changes that could spoil the experience for you and your guests, and we know that it may also be difficult for you, and your family and friends to attend because of potential travel restrictions, health concerns and financial challenges.

The date of your award is when University Exam Boards meet and agree you have met the required criteria for the award of your degree. You results are available on Bucks Connect, and you will be emailed when they are available.

Your award is achieved when a Board of Examiners confirm that you have met the criteria to be awarded your degree and the date of this meeting is the date which will appear on your certificate. This is different to your ‘graduation’ date which relates to the ceremonial aspect.

Please don’t worry, you’ll still get your award on time. The Award Board of Examiners will be held in July as normal, the transcript confirming your award and grades for individual modules will be made available to you in July/early August after the Board of Examiners meet. We’ll post your certificates to you in early autumn. We want to make sure that nothing stops the future you’ve been working so hard to prepare for since joining Bucks.

We are all so proud of each and every one of you, and it’s important to us that we find a way to celebrate with you this year.
