Bucks climbs latest league table for teaching quality, student experience and graduate prospects

Buckinghamshire New University has risen in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 for teaching quality, student experience, graduate prospects and its success in supporting all students to succeed. Bucks was one of only nine institutions among the South East’s 19 universities to move up the league table.

The University rose nine places for graduate prospects and was ranked highly for the quality of its teaching; the student experience it provides; and the amount spent on services and facilities. Out of 131 UK universities, Bucks is:

  • A top 25 university for teaching quality, rising 11 places this year;
  • Ranked 34th for student experience, moving up 5 places; and
  • Rated 37th in the UK for the amount the University spends on services and facilities.

The Good University Guide also highlighted the University’s strong performance in widening participation in higher education amongst underrepresented groups, and in supporting all students to complete their studies and succeed. The Guide shows that Bucks has the:

  • UK’s 3rd lowest dropout rate for students from deprived areas (and the lowest in the South East);
  • 11th lowest black attainment gap across UK universities (and the second lowest in the South East)
  • 6th highest number of mature students in the UK (and the 2nd highest in the South East).

Professor Nick Braisby, Vice-Chancellor at Buckinghamshire New University said:

“I am delighted that the Good University Guide recognises everything we do at Bucks to ensure that our diverse community of students receive high quality teaching and support so they are prepared for successful careers. I’m very grateful to all my colleagues who work tirelessly to deliver on our historic mission to transform lives through the education we provide.”

Bucks is the number one university in the UK for the teaching quality of its Business Studies courses. The University is also 2nd in the UK for the quality of teaching on its Sports Science and Accounting and Finance programmes. Teaching quality for the University’s Sociology course was rated 11th best in the UK and Bucks was ranked 15th for Drama, Dance and Cinematics.

The University was also rated as one of the UK’s top five universities for the student experience it provides across a range of its programmes including Sports Science (2nd); Business Studies (3rd); Accounting and Finance (4th) and Sociology (5th). Bucks was also rated 18th best in the UK for the student experience for Nursing, and 20th by the same measure for its Communication and Media Studies course.

Professor Braisby added:

“I’m so proud to see recognition of our staff’s commitment to put students at the heart of all that we do at Bucks. Our strong performance overall and at subject level in this year’s Good University Guide is testament to the hard work that goes on every day to ensure our students reach their full potential and succeed in their chosen careers. We’re thrilled to see the University hitting the top spots amongst all UK universities for our teaching quality and the student experience we provide at Bucks.”

The Good University Guide follows the University’s rise of 28 places in the Guardian University Guide. This represented the 9th highest rise across all UK universities and was driven by the University’s significant improvement in this year’s National Student Survey, and its strong performance in the new HESA graduate outcomes data.
