Kitchen Design student praises course for raising standards

Natalie Peters, studying a Foundation Degree in Kitchen Design, has praised the course for raising the profile and professionalism of the industry.

“Before starting this course I could have planned a kitchen but putting boxes against walls is not what I dream of doing,” said Natalie.

“I needed a course like this to give me the confidence, knowledge and skill to help me achieve my dream.

“My father is currently our designer and the business owner alongside my mother but as they are edging closer to retirement it has always been our aim for me to move fully into the design side, firstly alongside my father and then eventually to take over the business and be our main designer.

“Currently all our designs are done by hand. We have no computer-aided design (CAD) but we recognise as a business we do need CAD and this will be brought in by myself with my designs, mixing in a little hand drawings to add more of a personal touch.

“This course is enabling me to achieve my final goal and my dream of becoming a professional specialist designer who can then take over the company fully and expand and evolve the company as I desire.

“I have learnt more in my first year that I could ever have imagined and my confidence has grown dramatically to the point where I am now starting to move into design and feeling comfortable about it.”

Natalie praised the range and variety of projects on the course, from high-end, high-budget proposals to ones using much less money.

“On our last kitchen design assignment we were working to a strict budget of £25,000, which had to include much more than just the kitchen units,” added Natalie. “It was a real-life, everyday scenario.

“The Foundation Degree is aiming to set standards high and encourage more professionalism within our industry, while learning from experienced industry experts.

“The course fees are very low compared with other degree courses and with funding from The Kitchen Education Trust (TKET) students can get up to half of the fees paid through sponsorship – in my case Franke.”

Natalie also praised the differing facets of the course.

She added: “This course is not just a kitchen design course but so much more than that.

“You are learning many other aspects to the business, so that you can come out ready for a long, successful career in the industry, as well as being equipped in specialist creative design.”

Course Leader Paul Lighterness said: “We are delighted that Natalie is getting so much out of studying on the Foundation Degree in Kitchen Design.

“The course sets out to introduce students to all aspects of kitchen design, through a thoughtful creative process supported by leading design experts and industry specialists.

“Through residential weekends students are also introduced to a broad variety of challenges and methodologies that enable a greater thinking of design practice and therefore challenge individuals during their studies.”
