A Buckinghamshire New University graduate has credited skills learnt on her Diploma in Operating Department Practice for having the confidence to step in and support work in an emergency theatre just two weeks into her career.

Riti Vishwakarma, an Operating Department Practitioner at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, won an Above and Beyond Excellence Report from the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.Riti Vishwakarma

She was recognised for covering for a colleague in the emergency theatre, carrying out her duties with ‘confidence and enthusiasm’.

Riti, who completed her degree in 2018 having previously worked as a voluntary services manager in the NHS, paid tribute to the skills she’s learnt on her qualification.

“I prepared the anaesthetic room and provided care for the patients, meaning we were not delaying further patients and were able to provide a good service for the day," she said.

"I was able to step in and support work in an emergency theatre thanks to the skills and knowledge learnt from my time at Bucks New University.

“The ODP course allowed me to go on a range of placements in the theatre environment so I was able to gain a lot of exposure and feel prepared for when I qualified.

“I absolutely love being an ODP. The role entails caring for patients throughout the peri-operative journey and ensuring that patients are having the best patient care and hospital experience.”

Speaking about winning the award, Riti added: “It came as bit of a shock but I am very happy!

“Being a newly-qualified ODP is a daunting experience but this has given me the confidence to know I can do the job well and it is nice to see that other team members appreciate the work that we do.”

Principal Lecturer Shane Roadnight said: “We are delighted that Riti has been honoured with this award and are proud she was able to step up during this difficult time.

“This clearly demonstrates that our learning relationship has worked and fitness to practice has been achieved along with the confidence to undertake such tasks.”
