Buckinghamshire New University has appointed Dr Sri-Kartini Leet as Head of Art and Design and she said she is excited by the opportunities students enjoy to work with industry.
Dr Leet has joined Bucks New University from the University of Northampton, where she was Subject Leader for Photography, and is looking to grow relationships between the University and art and design organisations to ensure its qualifications remain ‘contemporary and current’.
Bucks New University is a member of the Creative Industries Federation and students work on projects with companies and organisations including Dulux UK, The British Heart Foundation, Victoria and Albert Museum, Pentagram London, Shinola, and advertising agency JWT.
“I am astounded by the level of industry involvement across our courses and many of the staff who have come from industry understand the significance of these relationships in providing experience and live briefs for students,” said Dr Leet.
“Many of the staff who have connections with industry understand the significance of these relationships in improving what our students are learning and in gaining employment.
“I think what is really important is staying up-to-date with what is happening in the world our students will be entering when they graduate and ensuring our curriculum is in sync with changes.”
Art and Design graduates have gone on to work with companies including Abercrombie and Fitch, Burberry, Cath Kidston, John Lewis, Macmillan Books, Maclaren, Microsoft, Nokia, Rankin, Saatchi and Saatchi, and Wallpaper.
Dr Leet added: “Bucks New University has a long history of excellence associated with its Art and Design courses and that is something that attracted me to taking the position.”
Dr Leet is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is overseeing a range of courses including Textiles and Surface Design, Graphic Design, Interior and Spatial Design, Product Design, Fashion Design, Creative Advertising, FdA Kitchen Design, Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media, BEng Mechanical Engineering Design.
