In the run up to clearing BSc (Hons) Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training student Michael Ashworth has said studying at Buckinghamshire New University is proving a soaring success.

The 19-year-old has just completed his first year on the course and hailed the industry knowledge he has already gained and the input from professionals visiting to speak to students.Picture of Michael Ashworth in cockpit

Michael, pictured, who hopes to gain a job with an airline in Europe after completing his degree, said: “Bucks New University has supplied me with current and useful industry knowledge.

“The current industry professionals who have visited are also preparing us for a successful career as an airline pilot or in the air transport industry.”

Michael has been keen to get involved and is part of the students’ Aviation Society, organising events and activities including a trip to Emirates Aviation Experience in London, and said the ‘best bits’ of the course had included the practical flying elements.

This element involved flying lessons with an instructor, covering all aspects of flying an aircraft from learning the effects of the controls, to practising landings, radio work, what to do in an emergency and how to navigate.

He added: “I have really enjoyed the new experience of coming to university and meeting new people. Adjusting to university life, having lectures and seminars and being completely independent has been great fun but challenging.”Picture of Michael Ashworth and team

Michael said he would already recommend Bucks New University’s Travel and Aviation courses to other prospective students.

He continued: “The unique course is not offered anywhere else and it enables commercial pilot training to be conducted alongside a full degree.

“The support offered by the course and the University through the likes of industry professionals and mentors, including a British Airways Captain and Virgin Atlantic First Officer, is highly beneficial.

“The facilities, such as the library, access through the Big Deal to things like societies, and the Students’ Union’s night time facilities, as well as the Gateway GYM, are all plus points.”

Pilot graduates from Bucks New University are employed in a variety of roles, including as first officers with British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, and Thomson Airways.

Other graduates are instructors with training partners of the University including CTC Aviation, CAE Oxford Aviation Academy; Booker Aviation and FTA Global.
