Bucks Advent Calendar: Wednesday 13 December – The snow must go on!
Date: 13th Dec 2017
Missenden Abbey did not let the snowy conditions get in the way of its Christmas Craft Market in aid of Missenden Walled Garden CIO.
The widespread snow affected visitor numbers to the seasonal attraction at the conference centre, which is owned by Buckinghamshire New University, but it still raised money for the charity and all the leftover presents from Santa’s grotto are being donated to the Mix96 toy appeal, run by the Buckinghamshire radio station.
Missenden Walled Garden CIO is situated on its site and provides work experience to adults with learning disabilities or long term illness.
Marketing Executive Katie Shrives said: "We decided to remain open to offer some Christmas cheer through mulled wine and festive food to local visitors. Thank you also to the stall holders able to attend.
"We had arranged for reindeers but although they didn't make it Santa still managed to join us and gave out gifts to some very lucky children.”
Missenden Walled Garden CIO provides the gardeners with opportunities to grow in confidence and develop independence and also benefits the local community and environment. Missenden Walled Garden sell plants, beautiful hanging baskets and homemade apple juice as well as providing the Missenden Abbey kitchens with all of its home-grown fruit and vegetables.
The proceeds are still be counted from the Christmas Craft Market, but it also raised £100 through an independent raffle for the Lymphoma Research Trust to honour the late Keith Ryan, former chairman of the Missenden Abbey Board of Directors.
