Designer and Bucks graduate Dr Corrine Ellsworth Beaumont hit the headlines this month after her #KnowYourLemons campaign, which uses visuals to educate people about breast cancer, went viral. It was shared more than 42,000 times on Facebook alone.

We also welcomed new BA (Hons) Fashion Design’s course leader Jane Bowler and lecturer David Hopwood to the University who told students to ‘be brave’ with their concepts and designs.

Professor Colin Martin professor of mental health, responded to Theresa May's speech announcing a comprehensive package of measures to transform mental health support in our schools. Prof Martin said: "Teachers are not mental health professionals, and nor should one expect them to be. It's imperative that this training provides educators with the skills and tools they need to provide effective support to young people.”

Aviation and tourism students travelled from their base at the High Wycombe Campus to hear a talk by IT Futures Manager at Heathrow Airport Steve Armitage. He said: “I have loved my career at the airport and so really relished sharing it with others and hope they find something as rewarding I have.”

Bucks was named a finalist across six categories in this year's Student Nursing Times Awards including Provider of the Year for Pre-Registration Nursing which recognises those institutions that offer high standards of academic and practical teaching, and excellent resources.

This month we also produced a short film featuring photos from the last 125 years with help from Bucks Free Press archives, High Wycombe Society and High Wycombe Library to celebrate the University’s 125 years of education in High Wycombe.

Buckinghamshire Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (BTVLEP) announced £1.3m in capital funds to University Campus Aylesbury Vale to create an exciting Digital Innovation Hub which will be a centre for start-up businesses in the digital sector, with facilities including a cyber-security suite and virtual reality engineering design studio.Live Music Census

Twelve first-year BA (Hons) Music and Live Events Management students, led by academics Dr Stan Erraught and Paul Fields, visited Oxford as part of Britain's first live music census. The UK Live Music Census aimed to identify challenges the industry face, such as rising rates and other issues.

Masters in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) graduates Lesley Lyle and Dan Collinson travelled to United Arab Emirates (UAE) to work with the State Minister for Happiness. Lesley (pictured left) said: “With approximately 200 different cultures in the UAE, this is going to be an exciting challenge but we are very excited to be involved.”

Jamie AlexanderBucks Students' Union's Jamie Alexander was named as Students' Union Events Manager of the Year in the 2017 Ents Forum awards. Jamie said: "I was delighted to win this award. Everyone in the Union is committed to offering our students the best possible experience and it's great to receive recognition.''

A tech-savvy pair of students started up their own company despite not yet graduating and already had their first client on the books. Sarah Hrycyk and Katie Pink, studying BA (Hons) Advertising Management and Digital Communications, set up digital marketing consultancy, KAS Digital Insights.

The University presented a total of £11,000 funding through its Dragons' Den competition to four students pursuing business ideas. A dozen students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges including one of the UK's most successful entrepreneurs and long-term university backer Mike Clare for funding of £2,000-£5,000 each.

Virtual reality technology which measures eye-movements while patients interact with the environment was being used by psychology students at Bucks New University. A new Virtual Reality Lab, which took six months to complete, opened at the campus in High Wycombe. It was hailed as a ‘giant step forward’ by lecturers.

The Chief Nursing Officer for England, Professor Jane Cummings, told Bucks New University students they ‘are leaders of the future’. England’s most senior nurse in the NHS, who received an honorary doctorate from Bucks last year, spoke to nursing students during an event to mark International Nurses Day, alongside ongoing celebrations to mark the University’s 125th anniversary.

The dark underpass between the town centre and the University was transformed into a colourful mural thanks to a competition inspired and led by Joe Collins, President of Bucks Students’ Union. The mural, featuring on both walls of the underpass near Lily’s Walk, was based on a design by Graphic Arts graduate, Will Dover, and painted by local artist Dan Wilson.Mural in underpass

BSc (Hons) Sports Science and Coaching Studies graduate Daniel Bedeau was on the ball developing a career as an Academy Analyst at Premier League football club Watford. The 26-year-old, who graduated from Bucks in 2013, was interviewed about his role, the opportunities he is enjoying with the Vicarage Road side, and the advice he would give to current students.

Tableware to bring diners closer to the food they are eating, a punchbag to allow boxers to hone defensive skills, and a campaign to encourage recruitment diversity into the Armed Forces were among exhibits at the Bucks New University Arts and Creative Industries Show. Frazer Mackenzie, Head of School for Arts & Creative Industries, said: “We’re incredibly proud of our class of 2017.”

Bucks New University students’ animations appeared in the top ten of the most viewed films in a prestigious global competition. The Rookies is an industry competition which celebrates the year’s most talented student designers, illustrators, film makers, animators, developers, and digital artists; attracting more than 6400 entries.
