Richard Griffin MBE
Date: 5th Jan 2016
Richard Griffin, Director of the Institute of Vocational Learning and Workforce Research at Buckinghamshire New University, was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to health and care in the New Year's Honours list.
The Institute of Vocational Learning and Workforce Research (IVLWR) is the only institute of its kind in the UK focusing on the unregistered health and social care workforce. It works with national bodies like Health Education England and health and social care partners in North West London, Buckinghamshire, the Thames Valley and beyond. IVLWR's remit covers all aspects of health and social care vocational education and training as well as research, evaluation and policy advice and implementation.
Richard Griffin said:
"I am delighted to have received an MBE. It is fantastic that the Institute and Buckinghamshire New University's work and commitment to addressing the training needs of health and social care support roles has been recognised in this way."
"The essential workforce of unregistered workers - including 1.3 million care assistants - provide the bulk of face-to-face support to patients. Too often these staff are under-valued and there is a lack of investment in their training. I'm proud to work with my colleagues on the development of high quality learning and development for support workers which is fundamental to the delivery of safe, compassionate and effective care."
Sue West, Dean of the Faculty of Society & Health at Buckinghamshire New University said:
"I am thrilled that Richard has been awarded an MBE in recognition of his excellent work to address the training and development needs of the unregistered health and social care workers who perform a critical role in meeting the needs of patients across the UK.
"At Bucks New University, we are committed to supporting the workforce planning that is needed to secure the future of the NHS and serve its patients best. We develop degree programmes and training courses across the breadth of the healthcare sector and are the largest provider of student nurses in north west London."
Richard will be formally presented with his MBE at an official ceremony.
