Sue Unerman, Chief Strategy Officer at leading agency MediaCom, has given a lecture at Buckinghamshire New University on the changing world of media and the opportunities it presents at the launch of a new module.
Sue visited the University's Campus in Queen Alexandra Road, High Wycombe, for the launch of a module being taught to BA (Hons) Advertising Management and Digital Communications and BA (Hons) Public Relations and Marketing Communications degree about how best to harness new media and technology.
The module is being taught to second-year students on the course and Sue's lecture was open to students from other courses too.
Sue discussed lessons learnt during her career and spoke about a book she co-wrote with top brand strategist Jonathan Salem Baskin called Tell the Truth: How Honesty is Your Most Powerful Marketing Tool. It shows marketers how building an authentic, transparent brand is key to sustainable success.
She delivered the lecture in conversation with Vic Davies, Senior Lecturer in Marketing, and said afterwards it had been a 'valuable opportunity' to share her experiences.
Sue added: "I was very nervous beforehand and in fact speaking in front of the students in more intimidating than going to a client conference!
"They were brilliant though. Very warm and welcoming and I thought they asked a number of probing questions."
He said: "I really enjoyed listening first-hand to someone who has enjoyed a successful career in the industry.
"I feel like Sue Unerman did when she started her career and she said that wasn't sure which area she wanted to focus on.
"She impressed on the audience the importance of embracing every opportunity that comes your way and I certainly intend to do that."
Vic Davies said: "MediaCom is the UK's leading media agency and we have close connections with it both in terms of graduates working there and at senior management level. It is at the forefront of innovation so Sue seemed the ideal person to launch the module. The new module reflects how we want our Advertising and Public Relations courses to illustrate the best and latest thinking in the industry.
"MediaCom and Sue are at the leading edge of this so I was very pleased that what she said endorsed what we are doing on the new module."
The talk was supported by Bucks AdSoc, part of a nationwide society helping students learn more about the advertising industry. Bucks AdSoc provides a forum for Advertising Management and Digital Communications and Advertising: Creative students to work on projects and get a feel for the industry.
