Dr Barbara Humberstone, Professor of Sociology of Sport, has spoken at the 7th International Outdoor Education Research Conference at Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia, Canada, on the importance for health and wellbeing of enjoying the countryside and seaside. Dr Barbara Humberstone.

The annual conference was started in 2001 by Dr Humberstone and Dr Andrew Brookes of La Trobe University, Bendigo, Australia.

Dr Humberstone said: "The aim of the conference is to share research on outdoor learning between the northern and southern hemisphere and globally.

"The idea has gone from strength to strength with over 150 people from around the world attending the Canadian conference, which was also endorsed by a letter from the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau!"

Dr Humberstone also spoke at an Economic and Social Research Council seminar on 'More of the Same is not Enough-New Directions in Ageing and Physical Activity'. She spoke about the pleasure and wellbeing for older people participating in water-based physical activities.

Dr Humberstone was previously one of three co-editors of the Routledge International Handbook of Outdoor Studies, which contains 49 chapters from experts around the world on subjects including outdoor recreation and education, adventure education, environmental studies, physical culture studies and leisure studies, as well as nature-based sport and outdoor and environmental education.

It focuses on outdoor sports including walking, rambling, kayaking, and sailing. Outdoor education focuses on personal, social and environmental education.

Dr Humberstone is also among organisers of the annual Ageing and Wellbeing Conference at Bucks New University, organised with Bucks County Council and Movers & Shakers, which works with older people. It features lectures and presentations delivered by an international team of academics specialising in health and wellbeing, gerontology, physical activity, and leisure.
