What are Senior Residents?

Living in student accommodation has both academic and personal benefits. You get to live with your course mates and friends to study as well as enjoy your social life. Students sometimes find the move from home to university can prove quite daunting when it is their first time living away from their family. Living in accommodation allows students to explore their independence in a way that is safe and adaptable, part of which is owed to the safeguards provided by nightly Senior Resident (SR) shifts.

We as SR’s are diverse in that we all have different backgrounds and experience that can be used when helping students who are facing personal and welfare issues. This experience coupled with the training and previous years at university provides us the ability to better connect with and understand issues faced by newer students. Our time in training allowed us to become a closely knit group that can rely on each other to help students in the most effective way possible. As student staff we provide close, empathetic, and relatable solutions to common issues that students of all years and backgrounds may face. As SR’s we also completed training within first aid, fire marshalling and general wellbeing through reputable organisations.

Living in accommodation mixes students from all courses and allows students to diversify their friend groups, building lifelong friendships. The priority for accommodation is to provide a comfortable and stress-free environment that prioritises each student’s degree over the worries and hassle living conditions may have. As SR’s we are approachable to students and listen in an understanding manner to provide each student effective advice from a non-judgemental ear. Working together with the concierge and security, we provide support for all issue’s students may face during their years within accommodation. Where extra support may be necessary, we are able to educate students about other university applied services in a friendly and relaxed manner.
