This 12th century abbey has been a subsidiary of Bucks New University since the mid-1990s. Right in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, Missenden Abbey Conference Centre hosts some of the workshops included in our programmes.
At Missenden Abbey you won’t only enjoy our small class sizes and a supportive team of tutors, but also the beautiful countryside and all cultural activities Buckinghamshire has to offer. From award-winning museums and relaxing walking routes, to independent breweries and the Harry Potter films’ studios, we are sure you’ll find lots to keep you entertained.
Within walking distance of the Abbey, you will find the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. The British novelist lived in the village for 36 years until his death in 1990; he is buried locally at the Parish Church (St Peter and St Paul).
Only a 30 mins drive from Missenden Abbey you will also find Warner Bros Studio Tour, where you will have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter and explore the wonders of his wizarding world.
There are many public footpaths around the abbey for exploring the local countryside. The Chiltern Hills are a beautiful, unspoilt corner of England that lie only a few miles to the north-west of London and yet have a very rural character. The Chilterns begin in Oxfordshire in the Thames Valley and stretch north east through Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire to Hertfordshire.
Around Great Missenden there are also extensive cycle routes, connecting with the Chilterns Cycleway – a great way to get around and explore this wonderful part of the country.
Accessible parking is available at the front of the abbey, next to reception. There are revolving doors which can be adjusted to allow easy access for wheelchairs.
The abbey is a 12th century listed building and because of this, there are no lifts, and access to the second floor is restricted. All the ground floor areas are accessible, including the reception, garden room, library, bar, dining rooms, and the coach house building where half of the bedrooms and meeting rooms are located.
Please let the reception staff know if you have any access requirements, so we can do our best to accommodate your needs.
