Become a skilled designer
Our product design courses all share the same first year to give you a chance to try all forms of design. Once you’ve sampled every avenue of product design and found where your creativity blooms, you can specialise in the area that really interests you.

Interior Product design is the course that places most focus on the aesthetics and functionality of design.

Play an important role in a number of industries
With your skills as a product designer, you’ll be prepared for many different areas in the creative industries such as products for interior environments, designs for restaurants and for small households, work as a product manager, design consultant or set-up your own business as designer and maker.

Part of the role involves working closely with clients so you know exactly what they want as an end product. We prepare you for the relationship between client and designer with critique sessions and workshops. You’ll present your work to us in a relaxed environment and we’ll give you the support you need to develop.

More placements, more choices

Bucks is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field.

We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.

Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student. To increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.

UCAS CODE: W256

We embrace traditional forms of making skills as well as digital technologies. You will use a range of 3D CAD and rapid prototyping systems, and some fantastic workshop facilities to produce 3D models, fully working prototypes, computer models, animations and simulations to demonstrate your design solutions.

We also have special equipment for silk printing and well-equipped textiles workshops. Our graduates have gone on to work with huge companies. Even our current students create products that get taken forward into manufacture.

Be inspired by our team of expert designers
Some of our staff are designers themselves and keep updated on the challenges that surround the industry. Alongside seminars and groups sessions you’ll receive one-to-one teaching as we support you through your studies. While working in your studios or workshops you’ll always have someone to bounce ideas off.

Work in a professional environment on campus
We’ll give you opportunities to gain valuable experience working as a product designer. Throughout the course, you’ll work on real briefs, interacting with clients as you work on creating new designs for their business.

In the final year, you’ll work on your own self-initiated project. You’ll have the flexibility to create a brief and work on a project that mirrors the needs of business. We’ve found this approach to be incredibly successful and it creates some amazing products.

Course Modules

Module Map

This module map provides a list of the modules that make up your course.

Each module is worth a specified number of credits (typically either 15 or 30 credits for undergraduate courses). Compulsory (or ‘core’) modules cover key subject knowledge, while ‘option’ modules enable you to develop your own interests. For a full-time course you must take modules worth a total of 120 credits at each level of the course. The number of option modules you can take depends on the number of compulsory modules at each level. You can find more information about how your course is structured via the Academic Advice pages.

Our teaching is informed by research and employer requirements, and modules change periodically to reflect developments in the subject area. In addition, where we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an option module, this may not be offered. If an option module does not run, we will advise you as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative module.

Thistle Martin

“I had never thought about doing anything connected to art but I completed a Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art Design and Media and then progressed on to the degree.

“Doing the diploma was the best decision I have ever made and the degree has been equally good. The staff work extremely well together and for our final project we developed our own  brief and were encouraged to explore it in whichever ways we wished.

“I have enjoyed studying in a supportive, creative atmosphere, and am excited about the career direction these new skills may take me in.”
