Are you an advocate for equal opportunities and fairness? Are you a stickler for rules and regulations? Business can be a challenging landscape but a degree in LLB (Hons) Business Law will give you the skills and competencies to help you make your mark in the field.
The lecturers on this course are very professional whilst teaching and are also very understanding when students ask questions and need support.Maria Guterres
Business can be a challenging landscape, with international trade, emergence of electronic commerce, contracts being exchanged and corporate governance to adhere to. Gaining an LLB (Hons) in business law prepares you to work in the legal profession, business, legal aspects of finance, insurance, corporate negotiating and government services. Having a degree that meets the requirements of the Solicitors Regulatory Authority, the academic stage requirements for the new, centralised external Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) and Bar council will provide the perfect opportunity to kickstart your legal career.
As well as the support from our lecturers, our Students’ Union has a Mooting Society. Giving you the perfect opportunity to pursue your passion for law outside of your timetable. It allows you to meet with likeminded students and practise court proceedings and arguing your case. You even have the opportunity to participate in varsity and national mooting competitions.
Buckinghamshire New University gives you the opportunity to choose your specialism for your future career after your experience of the core curriculum in year one. Rather than having to make your big decision before you join us, we introduce you to various specialisms and offer you the flexibility to choose the specialism which leads to your chosen career area. You can choose between LLB (Hons) Business Law or LLB (Hons) Law.
These specialisms are also offered as four-year programmes, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate programme.
Our law programme has been specifically designed with an international and contemporary perspective. It is designed to focus on contemporary issues in law with an innovative teaching approach that underscores employability and professional skills and practice.
Not all learning is done inside of a lecture theatre. There are plenty of chances to visit magistrates’ courts to participate in bail applications, visit Parliament and law courts to experience first-hand how they operate on a day-to-day basis. You can also meet guest speakers from across the legal industry, including judges, magistrates and law firms, to learn more about how you can apply your knowledge in the workplace.
What will I study?
During your time studying LLB (Hons) Business Law, you will cover diverse subject areas including law of contract, public law, business law and practice, Law of Torts and commercial law.
Studying such varied topics will help you understand how law interacts with society and government, alongside developing key skills, such as understanding complex information, attention to detail and analytical thinking which will ensure you are well placed to enter the employment market.
Our law programmes embed professional skills modules in your first and second year. This gives you the opportunity to develop a high level of legal and employability skills, enhancing your career opportunities. All the opportunities you’ll enjoy at BNU are designed to help you to further stand out from the crowd to future employers.
We are focused on providing you with all the building blocks you need to create a solid understanding of the law. Your first year will be integrated with the LLB (Hons) Law course. You will be taught a range of modules that cover both courses allowing you to collaborate with fellow students.
During your second year, you will study the Law of Torts, business law and practice, and begin to develop your independent research skills with the research methods module. You’ll learn to apply, analyse and evaluate the principles and theories and be able to reference and apply them to contemporary situations. You’ll also be able to choose optional modules from business law and practice, corporate social responsibility, and ethics in legal practice
In your final year, you will focus on preparing for life after BNU. In addition to commercial law, you will undertake an independent dissertation project on an area of law of your choice, to illustrate how you have developed a depth of understanding through a combination of critical analysis and evaluation.
You’ll be able to choose from a range of additional optional modules. These include advocacy and alternative dispute resolution, intellectual property law, contemporary legal issues, and international law.
There are field trips included in the course and I have sat in real time court cases and also participated in a mock bail application in the local magistrates court. This has also included visiting the Royal Courts and Supreme Court in London. There are networking opportunities available through frequent visits from high profile speakers and organisations.Theo Mukamuri
