Many of our lecturers maintain clinical currency by working in practice to ensure you receive the most up-to-date insights and training. You can also benefit from our state-of-the-art facilities.

Credits: 20 credits at Level 6 and 7

Why study this subject?


This module is for healthcare professionals who are:

  • interested in extending their knowledge and skills in caring for patients with cancer
  • keen to improve their understanding of the issues faced by patients and loved ones with a diagnosis of cancer
  • committed to developing their professional portfolio in this area of clinical practice.

Ideally, you should be working in a clinical area that offers regular contact with patients who have cancer.

  • the philosophy of cancer care
  • the scientific basis of cancer: epidemiology, aetiology, carcinogenesis, the genetic basis of cancer
  • cancer prevention and early detection
  • screening, investigations, staging and diagnosis
  • disease trajectories
  • site specific cancers and metastatic disease
  • the social, psychological, emotional, spiritual and cultural context of cancer care
  • treatment modalities to include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapies, biological therapies and complementary therapies
  • current trends in cancer management and health promotion
  • evidence based practice and cancer related clinical studies
  • oncological emergencies
  • rehabilitation and survivorship
  • contemporary issues: e.g. the expert patient, community vs hospital care, cancer inequalities in the NHS.
  • health policy and cancer NHS reform.

When will this course run?


This course runs on Wednesdays at our Uxbridge campus.

What are the course entry requirements?

A typical offer will include a minimum of six months' post-registration experience within a relevant area of practice.

Applicants must:

Be registered health care professional with for a minimum of six months' post-registration experience within a relevant area of practice.

Hold 120 Level 5 credits (or equivalent) to apply for the Level 6 module

Be educated at degree level to access Level 7 module ( master's study)
