Course Overview

There is an increased need for access to evidence based psychological therapies throughout the UK.

This course would be appropriate for those interested in the treatment of mental health problems and may include:

  • psychologists
  • mental health professionals
  • occupational therapists
  • GP's
  • nurses
  • social workers and other suitable graduates.

Professionals who are currently qualified in a different therapeutic approach may enrol for the PGDip in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

This course is also offered on a full-time basis.

What will this course cover?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective evidence based approach that is recommended in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines as the treatment of choice for a wide range of mental health presentations.

CBT has been shown to be effective in the treatment of:

  • depression
  • panic attacks
  • phobias
  • obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • anxiety
  • eating disorders
  • insomnia
  • relationship problems
  • workplace stress
  • self esteem issues
  • substance abuse/misuse
  • anger management
  • physical health problems
  • occupational health issues
  • psychosis.

Trainees will learn to work with common mental health problems, such as mild to moderate anxiety and depression, progressing through their training to the treatment of more complex cases.

Your tutors will be experts in the field, many of whom are Chartered Counselling Psychologists, Accredited Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapists and/or HPC Registered.

You will also benefit from guest lecturers who provide specialist workshops.

This course is accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) at level two.

This training meets the requirements of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) minimum training standards.

Upon completion of the MSc or PGDip in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy graduates can apply for provisional accreditation with the BABCP.

Course Details

What are the course entry requirements?

Applicants should have a relevant degree in psychology or the equivalent from an allied field.

You must also have at least two year's post-graduation work experience working with vulnerable adults and/or those with mental health problems.

It is a pre-requisite of the course that applicants have access to a BABCP Accredited therapist to supervise them and a clinical placement to enable them to implement their training into practice.

Interviews will take place with short-listed applicants.

How much does it cost

Part Time Home and EU, Academic Year 2021-2022: £3,450 for Year 1; £6,550 for Year 2

What are my career prospects

Qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapists may pursue careers within the NHS, the private or commercial sectors.

Alternatively, the master's degree may lead to a PhD programme or a research career.

How will you help me prepare for my future career?

Upon completion of the MSc you should have a sound knowledge of theory and research relevant to the practice of CBT and an in-depth working knowledge of the practice of CBT in therapeutic settings. As well as this you will have a comprehensive understanding of ethical and professional issues; the ability to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively; make sound judgments in the therapeutic setting and communicate clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
