Dr Mohammad Rana

Biography

Before I joined in Buckinghamshire New University in 2020, I was working as a lecturer in Derby College for one-year specialising in instrumentation, control system engineering, programmable logic controller, automation and robotics. I was in-charge of robotics, mechatronic and electro-pneumatic and industry-4.0 system laboratory. Before that, I worked in industry as a senior engineer for six years where I installed, commissioned, troubleshooted and repaired automated manufacturing machineries, inverters, converters, printed circuit boards and developed control circuits and systems.

I was a graduate research student for my MPhil/PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Glyndwr University from 2012 to 2014 and Staffordshire University from 2014 to 2019 where I developed a Self-Healing Control Algorithm for Smart Grid systems. My specialism has given me in depth knowledge of the Self-Healing Control techniques for affordable, reliable and secure Smart Grid systems.

As part of my MPhil/PhD, I worked on DC-DC converter, PID and adaptive controllers, AMR sensor, ARM M-3 Cortex microprocessor, SCADA, RTU and C/C++. I have over 16 years’ experience of industry, research and teaching in the area of instrumentation, control and power electronics. I also have hands-on experience of working in electrical, mechanical, magnetic and optical transducers and sensors, industrial controllers and power electronics converters. I am an expert in designing and fault finding of MOSFET, Transistor and IGBT circuit and systems. My research interests include force-position control for robot manipulator, servomechanism, innovative sensor technologies, PLC and automation, control techniques for permanent magnet synchronous motor and brushless DC motor, control and optimisation of clean growth, local energy systems and Smart Grids operations. I am a member of IET and fellow of HEA in the UK.

My specialist knowledge has led me to join in several engineering workshops, conferences and colloquial such as in The British Library, PNDC.

My career highlight to date is to demonstrate industry-4.0 system including mechatronic and robotic manipulator to the Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson in September 2020, on a visit to learn more about work underway to better prepare young people for the world of work and support local companies’ skills requirements.
