Dr Julia Williams

PhD, MEd, BSc (Hons), Dip D/N, RN

Senior Lecturer

To date Julia’s educational and research profile spans over 20 years, demonstrating a commitment to the development of academic nursing, ensuring the delivery of knowledge in a meaningful way. As PG Dip Programme Leader, quality assurance in the relation to the student experience is essential. Through educational innovation and leadership, a compassionate nurse, can be ready to practice. Julia’s area of clinical interest lies within colo-rectal nursing. Having worked as a specialist and lead nurse for many years, Julia now makes contribution to research with a focus on understanding the patients experience within this specialist field. Recent doctoral studies sought to define knowledge and skills translation within specialist nursing practice. Using a qualitative approach, this work identified the possession of specialist knowledge and skills but a lack of emotional intelligence in order to translate it in a manner comprehensible to the patient. Julia is currently Module Leader for three research modules within the nursing programmes offered at Bucks New University, at level 5, 6 and 7. These modules introduce students to approaches in research, enabling them to demonstrate critical thinking and an understanding of the research process. An awareness of different learning styles has equipped Julia to offer creative teaching to best enhance the students grasp of research. Julia’s role also includes dissertation supervision for both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students. Current activities outside of the University include; External examiner for University of Hull, Consultant Editor for Gastrointestinal Nursing Journal (GIN) editorial board member for British Journal of Nursing (BJN).
