Dr Julia Williams

Biography

I joined Buckinghamshire New University in 1995 with an educational and research profile spanning over 15 years.

My main area of clinical interest lies within colo-rectal nursing. Having worked as a specialist and lead nurse for many years, I now make contribution to research with a focus on understanding the patient’s experience within this specialist field. Recent doctoral studies sought to define knowledge and skills translation within specialist nursing practice. Using a qualitative approach, this work enabled me to identify specialist nurses were in the possession of expert knowledge and skills but at times lacked the emotional intelligence in order to translate this knowledge in a manner comprehensible to the patient.

I currently module leader for three research modules within the nursing programmes offered at Buckinghamshire New University, at level 5, 6 and 7. These modules introduce students to approaches in research, enabling them to demonstrate critical thinking and an understanding of the research process. An awareness of different learning styles has equipped me to offer creative teaching to best enhance the students’ learning. My role also includes dissertation supervision for both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students at both MSc and PhD.

Current activities within the University include sitting as Chair of Research Forum for the School of Nursing and Midwifery and as a panel member for the ethics committee.

Outside of the University, I am joint lead to the Faculty of Research and Knowledge Exchange for the Buckinghamshire Health and Social Care Academy, external examiner for University of Hull, consultant editor for Gastrointestinal Nursing Journal (GIN) and an editorial board member for British Journal of Nursing (BJN).
