Mr James Ellis

BSc (Hons), PGCert, FHEA

Senior Lecturer

Biography

Capitalising on over 14 years of clinical experience as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), James now works as a senior lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University. During his early ODP career in the NHS, James worked at a number of hospitals gaining a range of experience in different surgical specialities but it was a passion for paediatrics that led to a senior position in the ‘West Wing’ at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Whilst here James was part of the anaesthetic team for a range of paediatric specialities including Neuro, ENT and Craniofacial surgery. In addition to his ODP duties, he took on the role of Department co-lead for clinical governance and risk assessment, was the GE Healthcare anaesthetic machine ‘train the trainer’ and he qualified as an Immediate Life Support (ILS) instructor for the Resuscitation Council (UK). It was when he was asked to join the faculty of the Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia (MEPA) course at the Oxford Simulation Centre, that James discovered his passion for promoting learning through the use of high fidelity simulation; an area that he continues to promote within his teaching practice today. James has been a part of the ODP programme at BNU since its conception and has contributed to its successful delivery. Most recently, alongside the rest of the ODP team, he co-wrote the BSc (Hons) programme as well as developing a range of post registration modules including Anaesthetics, Surgery, Recovery and Surgical First Assistant.
