Graduate among Founding 50 promoting marketing careers to schoolchildren

Buckinghamshire New University graduate Tyler Lawrence says he wouldn’t be where he is in his career in marketing were it not for his degree – and he’s going to be promoting the profession’s virtues to schoolchildren.

Tyler, who graduated with first-class honours in BA (Hons) Business and Advertising Management in 2013, is among influential young people in the industry tasked with spreading the word in schools about how rewarding a marketing career could be.

Tyler Lawrence Tyler, 27, a Marketing Manager at Stace LLP, an independent, multi-disciplinary construction and property consultancy, said marketing was among the areas he found most valuable on his degree.

Now he is among ‘The Founding 50’ - 50 marketers aged under 30 recruited to promote the vocation in classrooms.

The cross-industry initiative, backed by organisations including Marketing Week magazine, will see Tyler and other members of The Founding 50 visiting schools during 2019 to raise awareness and understanding of marketing as a career.

Tyler said: “I am very proud to be part of The Founding 50. I believe marketing is going through an important and potentially defining period in how it is perceived and how it develops.

“I believe we are seeing less marketing leaders sitting in boardrooms and that people are questioning the value of formal education for our industry. We need to alter that perception.

“We as a profession seem to be focusing on only one 'P', of 'Promotion', and ignoring the others of ‘Price’, ‘Place’, and ‘Product’. This means we’re ignoring fundamental principles.

“Being a part of the Founding 50 will allow us to be ambassadors for our profession and hopefully inspire many into considering and pursuing a career in marketing.”

Speaking about his degree, he said: “I owe a lot to Bucks.

“During my time at the University we were fortunate to be thrown in at the deep end and deliver marketing campaigns and pitch our ideas to leading professionals from household names such as The 02 and Selfridges.

“This, along with learning the foundations of our profession from theories, to methodologies and strategies, allowed me to gain a great education.

“Bucks has the right balance of theory versus practice and my degree fuelled my passion and gave me the confidence to get my foot on the career ladder. 

“I know when I went to university my knowledge was very limited but the degree was ideal in ensuring I could pursue my ambitions. Now I want to impress marketing’s benefits to the next generation.

“I hope the Founding 50 delivers on its objectives and will bring tangible benefits to our industry. If we can achieve this I will be happy to have played my small part.” 

Course Leader Vic Davies said: “We are very proud that Tyler has become a recognised advocate of the marketing profession.

“He took full advantage of the opportunities that we offer here at Bucks, where we seek to develop not only the student’s academic knowledge, but actively give them the chance to match this against real-world scenarios and live briefs.

“We seek to trigger a real interest and passion in a subject, so that this continues on once a student has graduated, aiding the development of their career. Tyler is clearly demonstrating this.”
