A former BA (Hons) Dance and Fitness student who has performed with the likes of Ariana Grande and Little Mix has credited Buckinghamshire New University as being ‘the place where I discovered my passion for dance’.Luke Johnson

Luke Johnson, 25, is a professional commercial and hip hop dancer and has performed with household names on MTV Europe Music Awards, The BRIT Awards, MOBO Awards, The X Factor, and Britain's Got Talent.

He said he was the first man on the BA (Hons) Dance and Fitness course and said the professional training he received at Bucks New University gave him the ‘tools and skills’ to evolve as a dancer and prepare for the industry.

“Dance has allowed me to travel all around Europe, from France and Spain, to Germany and Italy, and elsewhere in the world, to Hong Kong and China,” said Luke.

“A recent achievement I’m especially proud of was the opportunity to be among core dancers for the new Disney film, Aladdin, alongside one of my heroes, Will Smith.

“Dance has also allowed me to venture into fashion, modelling and performing for brands including Adidas, H&M, Paul Smith, Victoria Secret Fashion Show, Superdry and Dolce&Gabanna at Milan Fashion Week.”

Luke said the course also helped him learn different teaching techniques and how to benefit from working self-employed.

He added: “The most beneficial parts of the course included learning about anatomy, nutrition, and body maintenance, as well as different teaching techniques within dance.

“Bucks is an amazing university to attend. It has a strong dance community within the courses and also the BNU Dance Society.

“The tutors were incredible and since leaving have still made time for me and have frequently asked me to come back and teach masterclasses.

“I would highly recommend this course for anyone who would like to further a career in dance or fitness. I probably wouldn't be where I am in my career if it wasn't for Bucks New University.”

Senior Lecturer Dr Heidi Ashton said: “Luke has done fantastically well, demonstrating great tenacity and professionalism in his career.

"He is a shining example of how varied and exciting a career in dance can be.

"We are immensely proud of all our students and their achievements."
