Honorary Doctorate for former Chief Nursing Officer
Date: 8th Sep 2017
Former Chief Nursing Officer Dame Christine Beasley DBE has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Buckinghamshire New University.
Dame Christine, a former Chair of Council at the University, received the award from Vice-Chancellor Professor Rebecca Bunting during a week of graduation celebrations.
The well-respected figure was recognised for her distinguished nursing career, her role as Chief Nursing Officer and her broad experience of policy development and leadership.
Dame Christine said: “I am both proud and humble that the University offered me this award. It not only recognises me personally but also all those who have worked with me over the years to make changes to nursing and healthcare.
“I have been privileged to help raise the profile and contribution of nurses to improving health and healthcare.
“I am delighted that whilst I was Chief Nursing Officer the decision was made to take the level of registration for nurses to degree level so that they are rightly prepared for the challenges that are ahead of them.
“I am also proud that I lead the work nationally that highlighted the unacceptable level of MRSA and C. Difficile and the national reduction that followed.”
Speaking about her time as Chair of Council at Bucks New University, Dame Christine added: “I spent four years as Chair of Council and it was a great experience in which I learnt a lot and built a Council with the right range of skills to help support the University’s executive team.
“I was pleased to help with the growth of the Faculty of Society & Health and proud of the work I did with Bucks Students’ Union.”
Dame Christine said returning to the University for the graduation ceremony had felt in some ways like ‘returning home’.
She added: “It reminded me of the happy years I spent at Bucks and I felt proud to be part of a ceremony where so many were at the start of their careers. I hope they will have as much fun as I have had in my career.”
Sue West, Dean of Faculty of Society & Health, (pictured with Dame Christine) said: “Christine has given so much to the profession of which I am proud to belong and graduates at her ceremony this week have commented that she is a true inspiration.”
