Missenden Abbey unveils new bar lounge inspired by Oliver Cromwell

Did you know that Oliver Cromwell’s troops camped on the lawns of Missenden Abbey on their way to the Battle of Brill during the English Civil War in the 17th century?

The piece of history inspired the name of The Cromwell Bar at the 12th century Abbey, owned by Buckinghamshire New University in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, which has opened following a makeover of the existing bar lounge.

The hotel and conference centre has appointed bar supervisor Jordan Chapman, revamped its list of suppliers to focus on local businesses, and in 2018 is welcoming a new selection of mature wines from Mathew Clark and introducing a ‘lavish’ cocktail menu.

Kathy Cousins, Hospitality Manager, said: “The Cromwell Bar has been years in the making and we are delighted it has its own identity, recognising the link the Abbey has with local historic events.”

Explaining the link, she said Cromwell's troops were marching from London to the Buckinghamshire village of Brill in January 1643, where they were subsequently part of the Battle of Brill, when they stopped at the Abbey, owned at the time by William Fleetwood.

Fleetwood, although not an open supporter of Oliver Cromwell, was a close friend of John Hampden, who in turn was a major figure during the early part of the English Civil War and was Cromwell’s first cousin.

The new local focus means The Cromwell Bar is now serving gin from Griffiths Brothers Distillery Ltd in Amersham and ale from Malt The Brewery, in Prestwood.

Nick Watson, founder of Malt The Brewery, said: “We’re delighted to be supplying Missenden Abbey with our handmade ales.

“Being just one-and-a-half miles apart it’s a great fit for both our businesses and supports our joint positions on environmental impact.”
