A Nursing undergraduate has returned to her former college in Limerick, Ireland to share her experience of training as a paediatric nurse at Buckinghamshire New University. Noelle McCarthy, who is in her third year of a Child Nursing BSc degree, met with students at Limerick College of Further Education who hope to pursue a career in healthcare and have enrolled on the LCFE Nursing Studies course, which Noelle completed at the college in 2012.
Noelle is set to qualify in February 2016 and said:
"It was great to go back to my old college and speak to students on the course that inspired me to train as a nurse. I have very happy memories of my time there. I also enjoy studying in England and have received great support from the University both academically and personally."
"I would recommend the course at Bucks New University because the programme of study is only three years in the UK rather than the four-year Irish nursing course. The University has state-of-the-art facilities including simulation laboratories with hi-tech manikin 'patients' that can be programmed to interact just like real people. There is also a moulage expert who recreates realistic wounds, burns and scars on volunteers which brings the theory to life and helps me provide the best care to patients. The teaching has been fantastic and I'm looking forward to qualifying as a paediatric nurse next year."
Máire Woolven, Principal Lecturer in Adult Nursing at Bucks New University, said: "Noelle is one of around 180 students from Ireland who is studying for a Nursing BSc degree at the University. She is a great ambassador for Limerick and Bucks and I know she will be a terrific nurse when she qualifies. I'm delighted that Noelle has already been offered two post-qualification permanent jobs."
"Students can choose to specialise in Adult, Child or Mental Health nursing at Bucks New University and we still have some places left for our next intake in February. We know that studying overseas can be difficult and we provide practical and emotional support which our students tell us makes a real difference. Our Nursing courses run from our campus in Uxbridge which is around 10 miles from Heathrow airport which makes getting home easier too," said Máire Woolven.
Buckinghamshire New University is a leading provider of student nurses in London and has two intakes for Nursing each year - in February and September - with an equal split of theory and practice on its courses. Students can elect to take an international placement in the third year of their course.
