Date: 7th Jun 2016
Steve Trenchard, Chief Executive of Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will be giving a free public lecture on leadership in the NHS at 6pm on Tuesday 21 May at Buckinghamshire New University's Uxbridge Campus.
A mental health nurse for 23 years, Steve Trenchard became Chief Executive of Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in February. Before this he was Director of Nursing and Patient Experience at West London Mental Health NHS Trust.
During his lecture, entitled: ‘Leadership in the NHS: Wicked problems or compassionate solutions?’ he will reflect on his first 100 days as Chief Executive, and invite discussion on compassionately informed leadership in the NHS.
Steve will also consider the art and practice of leadership, taking into account issues arising from the public inquiry into the failings at Mid Staffordshire Foundation NHS Trust. Leadership has been at the centre of critical debate in the public sector for many years, and the inquiry findings published in the Francis report has stimulated a number of old debates as well as some new.
Steve has a strong background in higher education and was Principal Lecturer in Mental Health & Nursing at Leeds Metropolitan University, where he was the lead for the mental health education and training portfolio.
In his spare time, he is Chair of ISPS UK (International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis), a small charity dedicated to talking therapies and humane approaches to the recovery of people experiencing psychosis.
Steve said of his forthcoming lecture: “This is a good opportunity for me to reflect on my experiences to date and engage with colleagues in an area of public life such as the NHS which is close to all our hearts.”
Steve’s presentation is the next in a series of free public lectures to be held at Bucks New University, which seek to discuss issues affecting the community both locally and nationally. The lecture will be chaired by the University’s Professor David Sines CBE, Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean: Society & Health.
The lecture will take place from 6-7pm on 21 May in the Park Room at Bucks New University’s Uxbridge Campus, 106 Oxford Road, Uxbridge, UB8 1NA. Light refreshments will be served beforehand from 5.30pm and after the event.
Admission to the lecture is free and is open to anyone on a first come, first served basis.
