Research Excellence Framework

Date: 7th Jun 2016

Buckinghamshire New University is proud to say that we have world leading or internationally excellent research in all discipline areas submitted to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The University submitted outputs by 24 full-time equivalent staff in four subject areas to the REF, which is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. Professor Shân Wareing, Pro Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching.

The areas the University submitted in were: Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy; Business and Management Studies; Sports and Exercise Science, Leisure and Tourism; and Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory.

All of the areas in which the University submitted have 3* or 4* research identified, with judgements made are based on three factors: the quality of the outputs, the impact outside the higher education sector, and the research environment.

The ratings are: 1* - nationally recognised; 2* - internationally recognised; 3* -internationally excellent; 4* - world leading.

A total of 14% of submissions in Art and Design were ranked as world leading (ie 4*), and 56% submissions were in the category of internationally excellent or world leading (ie 3* and 4* combined).

In the Allied Health Professions, 2% of submissions were ranked as 4* and 28% were 3*/4*. 8% were 4* in Business and Management (41% were 3*/4*). Sports and Exercise Science had 14% recognised as being of international excellence (3*).

Professor Shân Wareing, Pro Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching, said: "Our results were a significant improvement overall on our 2008 RAE performance, both in terms of the quality of the research submitted and our league table position. We are delighted with these results and our upwards trajectory."
