BNU Military

Buckinghamshire New University is focused on providing educational and development opportunities for serving and veteran members of HM Armed Forces and their families. With our strong personal, professional and regional connections to the military, we are wholehearted advocates for and on behalf of those who serve, have served and their families.

This commitment is shown in that we are signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant and holders of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award. More than that, we are proactive and energetic in our efforts to give our military family of staff, students and wider community the educational guidance and support they need to achieve their aspirations.

We are also members of the Buckinghamshire Armed Forces Covenant Civilian and Military Partnership Board.

Our support for military education includes dedicated access to our BA (Hons) Organisational Capability Development and we have many military students on our postgraduate programmes, offering pathways from successful partnership with Frontier Risks Group.

In addition, we also have a specialist BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning in Tactical Populations programme aimed exclusively at serving Royal Army Physical Training Corps Instructors (RAPTCIs), Royal Air Force Physical Training Instructors (PTIs), and Royal Navy/Royal Marine Physical Trainers (PTs). This programme has been developed to equip service PTIs with the latest human performance optimisation knowledge and practical strength and conditioning skills needed to optimise the health, wellbeing and physical preparedness of Armed Forces personnel.

We have a large number of serving and former military tutors who are able to work closely with our military students and uniquely, are familiar with the pressures and challenges of balancing operational, work, family and study commitments. Our teams provide supportive and encouraging learning environments for our learners.

For our undergraduate students who are interested in knowing more about service life, there are opportunities to join Oxford University Air Squadron or Oxford University Officer Training Corps.

Reservist staff members are supported by our reservist leave policies and our military/veterans network at the University works together on collaborative projects, making effective use of a shared understanding of the requirements of military organisations and individuals to develop the unique opportunities that University offers.

Our LinkedIn Group, BNU Military, has a simple aim: we want to support our military and their families. This Group is for serving and former members of HM Armed Forces – with no need to be a student of ours. It's also for BNU partners to let our Group members know what they are doing and inform them about the opportunities that are available. The Group is intended to share information and resources for education and resettlement and to help members in their career searches where we can.

BNU are proud to support the wider armed forces community and offer programmes for UK Armed Forces personnel that maps the skills of staff to the characteristics of typical civilian businesses and services. The Armed forces offers a range of different financial support, Bursaries and Scholarships for selected candidates during further and higher education.
