Supporting our students to succeed

Supporting our students to succeed

We support our students to achieve their potential and succeed in various ways, from providing a comprehensive student support service to one-to-one learning development and career support.

We offer our students one-to-one learning development support: completing assignments, developing academic skills, and mathematics and statistics. Comprehensive academic skills resources are available online, and we also offer free pre-sessional courses for students who want a head start to university level study and who don’t have English as an additional language. Find out more about Student Learning and Achievement.

Our library offers thousands of books, e-books and online journals to support students’ studies and helps students to find and use the best specialist resources for their studies through tailored support for specific modules, one-to-one appointments with specialist librarians, or fast answers via email and online chat. Students are also supported with using our virtual learning environments so they can engage in learning and submit their assignments.

We offer extensive resources to help our students progress their careers both during their time at the University and for up to three years afterwards. One-to-one support is available for CVs, applications and interviews, while our website MyBNUFuture provides instant personalised CV feedback and a job search facility. Visit our dedicated Student Opportunities and Career Success page.

Our Student Hub, located in the Student Information Centre, provides students with support and information on a wide range of enquiries – everything from student support services, student IDs, tuition fee information, references, letter requests, and funding support such as bursaries and hardship funds.

Within our Student Hub, we have the Multi-faith Chaplaincy Team which provides pastoral support and spiritual guidance for students of all faiths or none. The team is responsible for The Sanctuary at High Wycombe, which is a peaceful place of rest, reflection, meditation and prayer, and also for our Bucks New Usage scheme.

Our Inclusion, Diversity and Disability Team helps to ensure our students get the most from their experience in an inclusive learning environment. The team can support with:

  • Registration with the university for reasonable adjustments;
  • Assistance in applying for Disabled Students Allowance;
  • Initial screenings for dyslexia and dyspraxia, followed by diagnostic assessment if required.

Our Counselling team offers free counselling sessions to students in a safe, confidential space. The team provides support for a wide range of concerns, including unhealthy patterns of behaviour and thinking, managing anxiety, depression and stress, building self-esteem and confidence, improving communication and overcoming blocks to learning.

We’re proud to be a friendly and inclusive University and offer a package of scholarships and bursaries to make sure that every student can reach their potential. We also offer financial assistance, including disability assistance and our BNU Hardship Fund, which provides discretionary financial assistance to help our students remain in higher education. It is particularly aimed at those students who need financial help to meet specific course and living costs that cannot be met from other sources of support. The fund can provide emergency payments for unexpected financial crises. Payments are usually given as grants, which do not have to be repaid of up to £3k per year of study.
