Studied: BSc Specialist Community Public Health Care NursingRole: Health Visitor, Britwell Health Clinic, Berkshire Healthcare Trust
From being a quick thinker to excelling at rapid response...
Berkshire Healthcare Trust provides community based health services across the region. Part of the NHS, yet run locally, the Foundation Trust work closely with the community to develop services that meet their needs.
"There is no typical day in my role. I'm an autonomous practitioner, which means I run my own diary and no two days are the same. Supporting "Well Baby" clinics, new baby visits and mothers at home, there's a lot of variation. As I work in a high need, vulnerable area, it means we have quite a lot of child protection work too, which involves communicating with social workers and other professionals. That's what I love - the variety.
"I couldn't do this job without my degree from Bucks New University. It's essential. It gave me a thirst for knowledge. It's made me more insightful. I question everything and I never take anything for granted - it's even given me a renewed appreciation for my own family.
"The best thing about studying at Bucks was the variety that came from doing both placements and study, and the support from lecturers, who were always available. As lots of us were mature students and hadn't written an assignment for a long time, we found that really helpful. There's plenty of support on offer, if you need it. At the end of the course, we also took part in a useful interview techniques workshop to give us the best chance of getting a job.
"As I was anxious before joining, my advice would be not to worry so much! Lots of people do the course and do it well, and for me, it was a great year. I miss my time there enormously and would love to do it again. I'd recommend it to anyone. So much so in fact, that I've even taken the opportunity to come back twice to talk to current students and offer advice!"
