Graduation

A Message from Professor Nick Braisby, Vice-Chancellor of Buckinghamshire New University:

I know you’re all working really hard in difficult circumstances to complete your degree programme. So it’s very important to us that our University community celebrates your achievement in the style you deserve.

Following the Prime Minister’s latest announcement, it’s still not clear when large gatherings of people will be permitted, or when our Graduation venue will be able to reopen. We don’t want to make changes that could spoil the experience for you and your guests, and we know that it may also be difficult for you, and your family and friends to attend because of potential travel restrictions, health concerns and financial challenges.  That’s why we’ve taken the difficult decision to postpone this September’s Graduation ceremonies until summer 2021.

We’ve not taken this step lightly, and we understand that you’ll be disappointed by this news. We’re as sad as you are that we can’t all be together in September to celebrate. However, we’re only postponing your moment of glory as you cross the stage… because we’re already making plans to hold a special graduation ceremony just for you in summer 2021. We’ll let you know once all the dates are set, and will keep you updated with all the latest information here. You can also email us with any questions at Graduation@bucks.ac.uk.

I am so proud of each and every one of you, and it’s important to us all at Bucks that we find a way to celebrate with you this year. We’re working up some ideas with Bucks Students’ Union to bring us all together virtually in September to mark the occasion. And we’ll share the details with you just as soon as we’ve worked out the best way to make it happen.

Please don’t worry, you’ll still get your award on time. The Award Boards of Examiners will be held in July as normal, and we’ll post your certificates to you in early autumn. We want to make sure that nothing stops the future you’ve been working so hard to prepare for since joining Bucks.

I’m looking forward to celebrating your award this year, and then getting together again next summer so we can hear all about your achievements and successes since graduating from Bucks.

Best wishes,

Nick

Graduation FAQs

Following the Prime Minister’s latest announcement, it’s still not clear when large gatherings of people will be permitted, or when our Graduation venue will be able to reopen. The date of your award is when University Exam Boards meet and agree you have met the required criteria for the award of your degree. For the majority of students this will take place in July this year.

Your award is achieved when a Board of Examiners confirm that you have met the criteria to be awarded your degree and the date of this meeting is the date which will appear on your certificate. This is different to your ‘graduation’ date which relates to the ceremonial aspect.

Please don’t worry, you’ll still get your award on time. The Award Board of Examiners will be held in July as normal, The transcript confirming your award and grades for individual modules will be made available to you in July/early August after the Board of Examiners meet. We’ll post your certificates to you in early autumn. We want to make sure that nothing stops the future you’ve been working so hard to prepare for since joining Bucks.

We continue to monitor the situation closely and to follow the UK government guidelines but we are hoping the next Graduation Ceremonies will now be held in summer 2021 for those who had their ceremony postponed from September 2020. This will be a dedicated celebration for those affected by the postponed ceremonies and will not be combined with the following year’s celebrations. Bookings for the ceremonies will open closer to the time and this will be communicated with all students in due course.

You will have the option to defer your graduation to a degree celebration at a later date
