Welcome to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH)

The Institute of Mental Health was established in November 2013 as a partnership institute between Buckinghamshire New University and West London Mental Health NHS Trust as founding partners. The Director of the Institute of Mental Health is Professor Colin R. Martin.

Our strategic intent:
The IMH is:

Our vision:
To bring together experts by experience, clinicians and academics to work together to support excellence in workforce design and transformation, inter-professional practice development, education and applied research, in order to continually improve the experience of service users and carers and to contribute to the generation of a culture of quality improvement, and advanced practice-focused and clinically applied scholarship.

Our aims:

  • promote a culture within WLMHT and Buckinghamshire New University of meaningful service user involvement and engagement in all aspects of their work
  • foster and develop excellence in practice through creative, flexible and responsive inter-professional education, skills building, practice development and evidence-based, practice, education and clinically-focused research
  • build competence, capacity, resilience and capability for evidence-based enquiry within the workforce
  • encourage inter-professional models of educational delivery, practice development and clinically-focused research to support care provided by health primary and social care professionals and support staff and the development of future clinical leaders
  • evaluate the impact and outcomes of resultant activities on the enhancement of client care, safety and workforce innovation and productivity
  • to build the reputation of partner organisations by promoting the Institute as a Centre of National Excellence in mental health innovation
  • to contribute and be innovative in curriculum design and redesign.
