Student Exchange Programmes

Bucks New University is committed to providing an international perspective in its teaching and other activities, and has therefore developed an extensive network of study exchange links with partner institutions abroad.

Bucks students have got two possibilities to study abroad: the Overseas Programme or the European Erasmus Programme. The latter runs with the support of the Commission of the European Communities within the framework of the Socrates-Erasmus Programme.

The Overseas Programme gives you the opportunity to live and study for one semester in certain countries outside Europe. The European Union-funded Erasmus Programme offers the same opportunity for Europe.

There are many reasons why studying abroad can be a beneficial experience. Here are just some of them:

  • Enhance your employability by adding an international dimension to your CV
  • Increase your cultural awareness by opening your mind to new ideas from other cultures
  • Gain an international network of friends
  • Improve your language skills
  • Receive a grant (certain conditions apply, however)
  • Experience life in a different country
  • Grow as an individual by mastering new challenges
  • Stand out from the rest

and HAVE FUN!

Who can take part?
Bucks undergraduate students who are in good financial and academic standing with the university and who have completed the first year of their course. However, students must also be enrolled on a course participating in the exchange programme as not all courses yet offer exchange opportunities.

When do the exchanges take place?
The duration and timing of a study exchange period differs between participating courses. As an exchange cannot take place during the first year of study, the most common for 3-year courses is the second semester of the second year.

Will I receive academic recognition for my study period abroad?
Yes, you will. While abroad, you follow an agreed programme of study which replaces the semester at Bucks. If you pass your agreed modules abroad, you will receive formal academic recognition for your study abroad period from Bucks.

Must I be fluent in the language of the host country?
No. Bucks has links with many institutions abroad where the exchange programme is
taught entirely in English. This is not only true for the USA but also for many of our European partners.

What about money?
If you spend one semester studying abroad and one semester at Bucks, you will have to pay full tuition fees to Bucks for the academic year in question but no tuition fees to the partner instituion abroad.

During your period of study at the partner institution you yourself will need to pay for travel expenses, accommodation, food, leisure, books etc.

During your time abroad you should be eligible to receive any grant/loan which you are normally entitled to, e.g. your local authority grant/student loan.

Students studying abroad under the Erasmus Programme might be eligible to receive a monthly grant while being abroad. However, certain conditions apply.

Where can I get more information?
Apart from student exchanges, there is also the possibility for academic staff to visit partner institutions abroad for either teaching or monitoring/preparatory purposes.

The Erasmus Policy Statement and the Erasmus University Charter set out some of the underlying principles of the exchange programme.
