Our MBA is available as a part-time and
full-time course and
is designed to help you meet the challenges facing managers in the
global business environment. It will develop your critical and
strategic thinking and equip you with the necessary tools for
solving problems. The School of Business and Management is a member
of the Association of Business Schools.
The programme enables students to develop a
strategic, integrated and holistic perspective of organisations.
You will study management at an individual, group and
organisational behavioural level as well as at a functional,
process and strategic level.
The course will prepare you for a high
flying career through the development of enhanced personal and
interpersonal skills, leadership capability, skills in business
development, and in facilitating change in organisations.
The course is designed to build the
following:
- strategic knowledge and reasoning in the functional areas of
business and the ability to identify and evaluate the relationships
between them
- business skills, both academic and practical, which will enable
students to perform effectively in a variety of managerial
roles
- enhanced personal development
- communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skill
- an international and strategic perspective on the functional
and operational areas of business activity
- analytical, critical and research skills to support the
development of corporate strategy
- a critical understanding of the tools and frameworks used in
modelling and systems thinking.
Key Features of the Course
The MBA course has an international focus and prepares you to
lead across global boundaries. As an MBA student, you will find
yourself among managers of a wide-range of business and cultural
backgrounds. This is the reason our teaching strategies include
business simulation games, group discussions and various team
working activities. These create a collaborative learning
environment that enhances your learning experience with us.
What is the outcome of the course?
At the successful conclusion of the course, you will hold the
degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA). This is the most
widely recognised international management qualification, and
qualifies you for exemptions from certain professional
examinations. It also allows for entry to further postgraduate
studies, including PhD programmes, as well as for academic and
professional work.
Course Structure
You will develop your strategic thinking in relation to the
market and the organisation as well as learning about aspects of
modelling, systems thinking and forecasting.
You will cover the areas of management and leadership,
performance management, contemporary issues in corporate strategy,
the use of management decision-making tools, and strategic
information systems.
The MBA modules are:
Markets and Strategy develops student’s
abilities in critical analysis of organisations operating in a
global and national context, drawing on integrated knowledge from
prior learning and study. It examines theoretical frameworks from
the leading strategy writers and economists, and explores how they
might be applied in practice.
Management Science and Systems provides
students with an awareness of the scope and application of
management science methods, particularly in problem structuring. It
also enables students to tackle management problems using the
appropriate soft and hard methodologies.
Management of Organisations aims to explain the
change process and the issues involved in making this process
either a success or failure. It also aims to develop an
understanding of existing change theories and the place of such
theories in the strategic context of managing organisations. It
builds upon the knowledge acquired about the different functional
areas of the business gained at Diploma in Management level (DMS),
and the strategic roles played by such areas.
Dissertation - as part of the course,
participants have to complete an individual dissertation (15,000
words) on a topical management issue or problem of their choice.
Prior to undertaking detailed research work, participants will be
asked to submit a research proposal and a research plan which forms
part of the assessment for this important piece of work. All
participants will be assigned an academic supervisor to support
their dissertation work.
Assessment
Assessment includes coursework and examinations. Coursework may
include group projects, presentations and online participation. The
dissertation represents one half of the marks for the final
award.

Requirements
Applicants for the part-time MBA
Programme should:
- have completed the Diploma in Management
Studies (DMS) to a good standard (i.e. with a final average
exceeding 50%). Applicants who have completed the Postgraduate DMS
at another institution will be invited to attend for interview
- be at least 23 years of age
- have at least two years’ appropriate experience in a post
carrying professional, managerial or supervisory experience
If applicants do not hold a Diploma in Management Studies, they may
be considered if they have:
- a good Masters degree, or
- at least three years’ business experience and evidence of
necessary prior experiential learning in the functional
disciplines, to equate to a Master’s degree .
