What is HND Furniture Studies?

It is a two year intensive course covering a broad range of skills associated with the small specialised furniture making workshops which are the mainstay of the British furniture industry today.

Key features of the course:

The course covers traditional and contemporary furniture making processes and is predominantly workshop based. During the second year students are introduced to more demanding, design led projects, including batch production, which have an emphasis on business. Chest of Drawers

What will I learn?

The first year is aimed at developing practical hand and machine skills in cabinet and furniture making, alongside allied subjects such as upholstery, metalwork, finishing, chair making, technical drawing and visual studies. The year culminates in a design and make project where students are introduced to the design process.  The second year consolidates the skills acquired in the first year through a series of design and make projects which include one-off commissions, competitions and more advanced cabinet making techniques.

What are my career prospects?

Most students gain employment in the furniture industry, some opt to continue their education and progress onto degree programmes whilst a small few set up their own workshops.
