Introduction
This degree programme has been developed with Cabair College of Air Training. Students can qualify for a PPL (Private Pilot’s Licence) whilst gaining specialist knowledge of operations and management of the air transport industry. In addition, students can gain a frozen ATPL (Air Transport Pilots Licence) for commercial flying. This means that once sufficient flying hours are acquired, you will be able to fly commercial aircraft.

The degree in air transport is designed for those students who wish to obtain a recognised degree in air transport management with a view to pursuing a career in the airline and airport industry. It is particularly aimed at those wishing to qualify as commercial pilots. The BA (Hons) Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training degree reflects the changes inherent in the dynamic aviation industry and prepares students with the skills and knowledge required to work within the aviation field.

All students undertake basic theoretical pilot training, while a range of practical and advanced theoretical training modules is available through our industry partner Cabair College of Air Training (CCAT). Students who successfully complete all the academic modules at in their third year at Buckinghamshire New University and all the CCAT modules will be awarded a BA (Hons) degree in Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training, plus a Commercial Pilot Licence with 'Instrument Rating' and 'Multi-Crew Co-operation Certificate' (Frozen ATPL). This will enable graduates to apply for first officer positions on airlines.

Students who fail to achieve any of the pilot training modules will have the opportunity to transfer onto BA (Hons) Air Transport with Pilot Training or BA (Hons) Airline and Airport Management. Delivery is varied and interactive, and student assessments take a range of different formats.

Entrants to the programme are expected to have a good standard of general education. They should have the equivalent of two good passes at A Level, and they should have passes in GCSE English and mathematics at grade C or above. Some knowledge of science subjects would be an advantage.

Mature students with non-standard qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants must demonstrate an enthusiasm for flying, a willingness to learn to fly and a commitment to a career in the airline and airport industry. Prospective students are interviewed by Cabair to assess their suitability for flight training.

Due to advice given by Cabair, please only arrange your interview during the year of your application. If you wish to defer your place, you will need to rearrange an interview with Cabair for the following year.

Basic medical fitness to DVLA (driving licence) standard is necessary for any practical flight training, while students proceeding to commercial pilot training need to obtain a CAA class 1 medical certificate.

This programme is unique in the UK Higher Education sector, as it allows students to obtain a university degree and a frozen ATPL in three years of full-time study at a lower cost than would be incurred in obtaining both qualifications separately.

The curriculum is enhanced by:

• specialist staff
• Private Pilot’s Licence
• frozen ATPL
• combination of academic study alongside professional qualifications
• Royal Aeronautical Society membership.

NB: Students need to book their Cabair interview by JULY 31st in order to guarantee an interview date before the course starts.
