Love reading? Why not write your own material? Creative Writing gives you a range of techniques and advice to help you create stories and tackle getting published. Share your stories, scripts and poems with the world by embarking on this course, where you’ll improve your own writing ability and nurture your creative talent.
Widen your knowledge of writing for publicationFrom novels, to film scripts, TV screenwriting, stage plays and a variety of short forms, you’ll learn how to write for a multitude of different media. We’ll help you improve your work and explain how to get your work bought, read, made and watched. Right from the start, students engage with the process of publication, from draft to final copy.
Learn about the publishing industryOn this course, you won’t just be writing. Getting published takes a lot of management as well as talent. We give you an understanding of the industry and how getting published takes more than constructing stunning prose.
We’ll take you through the secrets of the business. You’ll find out how writers get published and how the rise of the e-book has made the industry even more interesting. We’ll show you how you can self-publish – and how most rags-to-riches stories about famous authors begin with a lot of patience and hard work. You’ll also pick up skills on proofreading, copy editing and design software.
At Bucks, we have an ever growing creative department. And this course is one of our most recent editions. We’re excited to be able to deliver this new course with everything you need for writing. On campus, you’ll have full access to writing and design software such as Celtx, Scrivener, and InDesign.
Expert lecturers and professional guest speakersOur lecturers have experience writing in a wide range of areas – from advertising to novels. Many of our staff are published and have successfully navigated the complicated world of print. Our tutors and visiting industry professionals have a background in writing and publishing. They’ll advise you on your work and introduce you to areas of writing that you have never tried before.
We’ll also keep you updated on the latest news in writing. We have many guest lecturers, from well-known authors such as Gavin Smith (Veteran, War in Heaven, Age of Scorpio and A Quantum Mythology) and Charles Cumming (A Colder War, A Foreign Country, The Trinity Six); agents like Karolina Sutton (Curtis Brown), and publishers such as Titan Books and Newcon Press.
Gain experience in real life situations and briefsThis vibrant new course prepares you for a career as a writer. You’ll be taught how to make your own e-book so you’ll be able to publish your own work online, ready for a publisher to print. We’re also establishing work placements and writing opportunities with a variety of different professional companies.
For the final year, you’ll create a real proof – just like you would send to an agent or publisher. We’ll show you how to format and entice them with a summary of the plot and the first three chapters. You can also create scripts for film and television and get more people involved in your creative project, with live readings, audio drama and filmmaking opportunities just down the corridor. We always encourage collaboration.
A typical offer will include GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above and a UCAS Tariff score of 200-240. A minimum of two full A-levels (or equivalent) is required. Every application is considered on an individual basis.

Being a writer takes a lot of trial and error. But, once you graduate, you’ll be equipped with the know-how to get your work published and read by a commercial audience. We make sure that you know about the entire scope of publishing and the many different areas that you can fall into. If you love grammar and being a stickler, you can start a career as a proof reader or as a copy editor. If you find that you have a flair for persuasion, you can try being a copywriter. Wherever there are words to be written, you’ll find a job.
Throughout the course, there are sessions with visiting professionals. Some of these will be delivered in traditional master classes, while others will be online seminar conversations. These contacts and connections will help you prepare for a career in the writing and publishing industry as a multi-skilled professional.
