Travel and tourism is a constantly evolving sector and this insightful programme of study remains fully responsive to the industry changes. We are looking for adaptable, forward-thinking applicants who can develop strong leadership and people management skills. This dynamic degree looks at all aspects of the international travel and tourism industry. The course also gives you the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of the various fields within it.
This course also attracts mature students who currently work in the travel and tourism industry. This qualification is a chance to update your management skills, which may enhance your career.
What will this course cover?From marketing for travel and tourism, to managing customer service, you’ll learn about the various areas of this diverse industry and explore the management techniques required to navigate them. You’ll study key modules in contemporary and business tourism as well as destination planning and development.
Throughout this course you’ll develop skills integral to a successful career in this field. You’ll spend time looking into crisis management and learn about logistical issues and how to handle them.
We’ll give you a deep understanding of the industry and at several stages of the course you’ll have the chance to go on field trips. These visits not only allow you to see the professional working environment first hand, but help you choose a particular career path in this diverse sector.
You’ll have the opportunity to go on voluntary work placements, which will provide you with further insight into international travel and tourism. During this time you’ll be able to fine-tune the skills learned in the classroom in a practical, real-time setting.

This course also benefits from a number of guest lecturers from within the travel and tourism industry. These experts bring a unique perspective to the course and can help you to broaden your career choices.
Study abroadAt Bucks you’ll have the chance to study abroad at one of our partner universities. This time can be invaluable, offering you the opportunity to further develop communication skills in a different environment - extremely beneficial in this global industry.
Industry work experienceAt the end of your second year you’ll have the opportunity to find seasonal employment within the industry. This work experience gives you an insight into the inner workings of tour operators, travel agents, theme parks as well as airports and airline operators, and can help you fine-tune your future career path.
The department continuously pursues new partnerships in order to help you find suitable placements. You’ll be given the opportunity to attend a number of workshops to help you in this process, which include sections on the procedures for work placement feedback and guidance on taking related modules during your seasonal employment. Being within such close proximity to London, you’ll be able to pursue placements in five star hotels and major theme parks.
A typical offer will include GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above and a UCAS Tariff score of 200-240. A minimum of two full A-levels (or equivalent) is required. Every application is considered on an individual basis.

When you finish this course you’ll be well qualified to pursue a number of different careers within the travel and tourism industry. These might include working with cruise operators, travel agents and destination management companies. Marketing agencies that specialise in tourism are also an option as are developers and suppliers of niche tourism products, such as eco-tourism.
Alternatively, you may choose to develop your own small tourism venture, or further your studies at postgraduate level.
