Is this course for me?

This course teaches you the practical aspects of flying needed for a variety of air transport roles. This programme also attracts mature students and those currently employed within the industry, offering an opportunity to further their skills and knowledge in the aviation sector and the potential for career advancement.

What will this course cover?
During this course you’ll acquire specialist knowledge in airline and airport operations, and have the chance to go on a number of educational visits both in the UK and overseas.

We’ve developed this programme with industry professionals to focus on trends shaping the aviation industry today and in the future. You’ll have the opportunity to carry out a substantial work placement within the aviation industry.

You’ll study modules in air cargo operations and ancillary revenue management, as well as aviation finance and economics. As you develop a deep understanding of the air transport industry you’ll finish the course well qualified to pursue a variety of different careers in this field.

We’ll give you the theoretical and practical pilot training knowledge to attain a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL). The PPL qualification allows you to continue your flying study at a later date, to achieve a Frozen Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).

Historically, Bucks has been the leader in aviation degrees with pilot training. Our innovative programme of study is unique in UK Higher Education and keeps pace with the continuous changes within the air transport industry. We’ll prepare you with the most up to date knowledge and skills required to work in the aviation field. We are one of only a few UK universities to have an FNPT II Flight Simulator, which you’ll use throughout your time with us for a number of training modules.

We are the only Higher Education institution to have been awarded the People 1st Gold accreditation for our aviation degrees. Being so close to Heathrow, the course attracts a variety of guest lecturers and our links with the airport provide great opportunity for seasonal employment and work placements.

Get your PPL
Through our flight training partner you’ll have the opportunity to train for your Private Pilot Licence during this degree. This gives you the practical experience involved with flying.

What are the entry requirements?

Each application is considered on an individual basis. We are looking for GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above and a UCAS Tariff score of 240-280.

Mature students with non-standard qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

You will also need a CAA Class 2 Medical Certificate to be able to carry out the practical pilot training.

How much does it cost?

Full-time Home and EU: £9,000 per year
Full-time International: £9,500 per year

Fees quoted are for the next intake and are subject to change. Fee costs for subsequent years are subject to rise with inflation or course delivery costs.

The private pilot training offered in association with this course is delivered by our pilot training partner and incurs an additional cost. However, a carefully planned payment schedule ensures the cost is spread across the first year of the course. Full details of the costs involved can be supplied on request.

What are my career prospects?

When you graduate, you’ll be qualified for jobs in the travel and tourism industry with a range of organisations, particularly those in the civil aviation sector. Some of the larger airline and airport organisations offer a limited number of places on management trainee programmes, while others recruit directly for posts in marketing and operations.

This course is a real eye-opener to the airline industry; it covers every aspect and highlights why things are the way they are today - where the industry has come from to the airlines and their business models. It really made me aware of the fascinating industry that I want to be a part of.
