Introduction to Furniture Restoration

As part of this course, you will be given the opportunity to undertake a small furniture restoration project. Each student will work on an individual project, with personal tuition from the tutor, which should be completed by the end of the course. You will receive tuition on subjects including the theory of furniture restoration, gluing, small repairs and polishing techniques.

Schedule

Week 1:

Getting started: tour of workshops and facilities; group session discussing the projects that the students have brought in; preparing a scheme of work; photographing the object

Week 2:

Dismantling the object; assessing damage; carrying out a simple repair to carcase; discussion on glues

Week 3:

Gluing up a carcase; carrying out a repair to a veneered surface; discussion on finishing

Week 4:

Preparing the object for finishing: cleaning, staining, polishing/waxing

Week 5:

Completing the finishing of the object; discussion on upholstery, gilding and fittings.

Additional requirements:

Each student will need to provide a small piece of furniture for restoration. If the students have some woodworking tools they are welcome to bring them along, but basic hand tools will be provided. Consumables and glue glass paper will be provided at a small charge.

Before joining Bucks New University, Paul was Head of Conservation at the Wallace Collection London. He has also run a number of courses in furniture conservation for local authorities for the past 20 years.
